Hadn't McCartney's 4001S come back to the RIC shop for "sprucing up" by the time any of the footage for the WOA show was shot? If so, then the horsey had been replaced by a high-gain.

i think i am starting to come around to finally being over horseshoe envy,jeff. i played my 4000 today through the markbass combo for about 45 minutes,and didn't see where spending another thousand or so for a hs could improve the way that bass sounds.....that pickup is full-range killer,and tweaking the markbass controls,it does a pretty decent job of simulating the missing toaster. (but i am leaving the pickup cover on!!!) this bass would sound a lot like paul's if i were to put flats on it,just diggin the rw sound too much to do it....

Nobody can argue that the horeshoe is a great sounding pickup, but listen to the sound PM is getting with the wings. Studio and Live. I just love it. To me, thats a Rick in all its glory.

To my mind and ear, it shows just how much Macca's Rick tone relies on the toaster (IMHO). I'm more convinced than ever that his harness is upside down, as we never ever do see it in the "up" position while he's playing, do we?

It really is a great friggin' tone, too! Harder to emulate than it seems, especially to execute it well and play and sound that solid.

See I hear the Bridge pickup being more dominent from his tone on that tour. Then again, I havent owned a Toaster pickup in so long. looks like he has the toggle in the middle. Def see it on Silly Love Songs from the live concert.

A previous owner of my V63 changed the wiring of the pickup selector switch to work the opposite way, to be like McCartney's Rick. That drove me nuts! I had to change it back to standard wiring.

Please can someone confirm the following story, I heard this a while ago. Paul sent back his famous 1964 Ric back to the factory beacuse the horeshoe lost its gauss and was no longer working. He only asked that the pup be repaired. upon its arrival at Ric, they could not fix the old horseshoe because the magnets were no longer available. So they used a high gain to replace it. then they replaced the broken pickguard, lowered the action messed with the bridge. When Paul got it back he was really ****** off at the work that he did not authorize. Can anyone confirm this. I think its a great story!

I think Dale was there not sure he performed any of the work though.
