The Nut on a 5 string

Ok this is been buggin me for some time now.For all you 5 string owners out there how is your nut cut at the top.
I see them beauty 4s out there are nice and round.Mine came from the FACTORY looking like they slotted it with a knife.It is a V shape and looks like a hack job.Now on the saddles it looks like they just took a corner of a file and had at it.I will try to post pics latter today.Just wounderin if my was just abused or that was standard procedure.
But her sound is nice.

I like the V-shaped nut slots. They allow you to change string gauges without modifying the nut slot. My 4001 basses have V-shaped nut slots. Though I did have to widen the B string slot in the nut of my S/5 a bit because I like to use a .130" B string and it makes quite a difference in diameter compared to the factory installed .115" B string.

While nuts and string saddles cut with triangle shaped files may be stock, there's pretty much no way to get your action set perfectly . I mean, how can you get the strings 1/16" off the fretboard at the first fret with a V shaped slot. Change string gauges, and the strings would now be either too high, or too low. No custom instrument builder would do it this way. I already know what gauge strings I like, so I don't need a one-nut-fits-all on my bass. Slots cut with nut files will also make more uniform contact with the string at both ends. I know that new bass nuts purchased from RIC are laser cut with the proper shaped slots.
