Here is a rare track taken from a rare album released in 90s called back To The Future it featured 60s stars like Gerry Marsden, Chip Hawkes, Dave Dee, Wayne Fontana performing more modern songs.

This is a Crowded House song, Roy! But as you mention REM: I always thought they had a "modern" Searchers sound. "What's the Frequency Kenneth" is a perfect Searchers song! They should have hunted more in this kind of sound field, than in the landscapes of "The Rose" and alike! Guitar synth!
