Got me a 4001C64

Post by cheyenne »

Well,, sort of, for a month anyway....

A good freind of mine (Bob), is turning 50 years old next month, and his wife contacted me wanting me to locate a "dot neck Rick". Well thats what Bob calls the "S"design anyway, she knows nothing of guitars and basses, and turned to me for the task. Bob already has a 'burg '77 that I've been trying to buy for years to no avail....and after gathering all the information I could I accepted the task. I know Bob is a huge Chris Squire fan and loves the vintage pickup look, I set out to locate a nice V63 or a C64. As luck would have it, I located a Fireglo 4001C64 at Pick of the Ricks. This is the first time I've dealt with Chris Clayton, and I cant begin to describe how happy I am with the whole transaction. Chris is a top notch dealer, and will definately be getting some of my business in the future.

Back to the story... I never really had G.A.S for a C series til this baby arrived yesterday. I've had a V63 in the past, and although they are similar, the neck on this C64 is simply remarkable. It set up in minutes and plays like a dream. Nice and thin from the thumb to finger, and very narrow. I guess this is what you guys go on about, if they all feel like this one, RIC made a mistake discontinuing them. I even like the upside-down headpiece.

As I said, this is only temporary, and he gets the bass on March 29th. I kind of hopes he doesnt like the color or something, and I can buy it from him. If not, I will be looking for one for sure...I should have ordered one when I had the chance...

Though not in production any longer, there are still existing orders to be filled. Perhaps an authorized dealer has one on order which has yet to come in, and is not spoken for.

I have a C64 and a C64S, and I've always favoured the latter for some reason. But this weekend I've been playing only the C64 and I am in love! I wasn't happy with the amount of work needed to get it setup when it arrived (that's another story) and I had kind of held a grudge against the bass for that reason. But now that I've spent some serious time with this bass it affirms my love for Rick basses and the C64 in particular. I would recommend that anybody THINKING of one grab it- in a year or two when they're scarcer and viewed as oh-so-collectible you'll be happy you have one.

I have them both and I love them both. I will say that I have gone back and forth between which one I like best but in the end I am glad they are both in the rack.

Having been offline for nearly 9 months, I just learned from Ron Sodano (Bosco64) on Friday night about the discontinuation of the C64. I'm heartbroken to say the least :( . After I'd parted with my '07 C64 last year, I instantly had seller's remorse and couldn't wait for them to start rolling out of RIC again. I thought that the only turnoff for most folks was the lefty headstock and it seems that whenever one becomes available, it doesn't remain that way for long - regardless of color. Totally took me by surprise to hear the news.

I was hoping to find another this year but with the downturn in the economy, that doesn't look like it's going to happen for me at this time. So it seems that I'll remain sans Rick for sometime to come. :(

BTW - I sold the 360/12C63 that I had listed awhile back. Sorry to those that had inquired about it and I never responded to. My home computer crashed in May and we never got around to a replacement until just this week due to a number of circumstances.

Bob loves his "dot neck Rick". :D

His wife let me present it to him at his surprise party. He saw me walking up with the case and said " Aw man,,,,if Scott's in on my gift, I know its something great"! When he opened it he was like a kid in a candy store. A pretty emotional moment for him.

Needless to say, I'll probably never get that one or the '77 burg. I've been trying to get him to join the forum, but he lives out in the sticks with no hi-speed internet. I'll introduce him some day soon with a group photo.

Aw come on, I'll bet I live way further out in the sticks and I don't complain... 'course, I've got 1.5Mb DSL

Great story, what a great thing to do for your friend! I'm glad to hear he loved it!
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
