I know Fang used a Hofner Club and a solidbody Vox Phantom. Can't remember if he had a hollowbody Vox.

The hollow Vox basses have a low-mid emphasis but with more true bottom and top than a Hofner.

There's an excellent interview with Fang in the new issue of Vintage Guitar.

I thought Fang had a pretty good sound when you could hear him, very deep but cut through. On which bass did he have his name on the back? It was a Vox wasn't it?

Didn't he do that with all his basses? The one he was seen with most often was his Hofner Club.

Yep, seems it was his thang. Great bass tone on some of those PR&R tunes.

Now, did they play on their records, or was it the wrecking crew (Hal Blaine, Carol Kay et al )?

Carol Kaye lists PR&R on her website among artists she worked with, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was anything more than a demo, and there's no indication of when it was or what was done.

Paul Revere was recording in Idaho long before he became famous, not like those artificially created groups like the Monkees. The basslines on the Fang-era tracks sound nothing like Carol Kaye or Joe Osborn to me.
