NEWLY-FINISHED PROJECT...

Post by jingle_jangle »

This one's been in the works for quite awhile now, requested by Andy O'Connor: A Rickenbacker 700C body with a custom-made 30" scale bass neck. The headstock is late '60s style. The tuners are satin gold locking Sperzels. The neck joins the body at the 15th fret.

Inlays are crushed pearl, and the paint finish is a five-color burst that Andy calls "Chianti". It started out with an amber base coat, over which a bright ruby red was sprayed. Then it was shaded with maroon, violet, and a little black at the very edge against the checkerboard purfling. It has a LRBaggs iMix stereo dual element pickup system.

The most challenging part of the development was getting the neck stiff AND slim, since most Rick bass players value slimmer (front to back) necks. This was accomplished with a carbon fiber spline under the fretboard, from edge to edge, tapered from .030" at the nut end to .125" at the body end. This adds graduated stiffness and gives the neck good spring and adjustability with the usual dual truss rod system. It also assists energy transfer and sustain, coupled with a 7/16" thick straight-pull bridge. You can see the carbon fiber as a black stripe on the edge of the neck running from nut to body:

The tone, acoustically speaking is crisp and authoritative. But when it's amped, it really comes into its own--the dual element pickup gives a choice of stereo output or mono, with an adjustable balance between the upper and lower piezos. Upper, under-saddle gives a nice growly treble tone, and the lower, under bridge plate, is a lovely mellower timbre, but without a trace of mud. I ran this through my '63 Dual Showman and it rattled the speakers...oops. Through my aluminum-coned Berhringer 300W, it is, erm, quite authoritative, although it of course can be toned down for smaller rooms.

Thanks for your cooperation and patience, Andy!

Wow! What a great-looking instrument! I'm too caught up in the finish color and the arresting Rick-bass-neck-on-acoustic-body to totally appreciate the carbon-fiber science / bass neck feel. Not that it matters, but I'd be interested to know how you arrived at that color burst. Redburst? -- for lack of a better term.

Fine work, Paul, and never lacking in practical and astounding innovation! :D

Wow! That's a beauty Paul. You have created a masterpiece IMO. I would love to hear the tonal qualities at some point.

Whew! Thought I was gonna bust something.

On seeing it during construction I knew this was going to be enormously beautiful, but nothing could have prepared me for the finish. Congratulations, Paul, on another stunning success. And Andy, this is certainly your moment as well. I raise a glass to you both. Chianti, anyone?

That is just uber-cool Paul. I have never really seen an acoustic/electric bass that I would want to own....until now.

The neck construction is so elegant, the proportions are so well balanced, the finish is so lustrous... I could go on and on...the combination engineering, design and craftsmanship is absolutely brilliant! :D Congratulations!

I'm sure Andy is one extremely happy camper. If not, you know my email address!

So, the mysterious 4 string finally appears! Fantastic & absolutely stunning!

The carbon fiber spline is a great idea. There have been lots of suggestions made to the folks at RIC to use carbon fiber, interesting that the first use of it (that I've heard of anyway) is in an acoustic/electric bass made outside the "normal" RIC factory.
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Kudos Paul! For many years I had a Guild B30 acoustic bass which had a jumbo body and 30" scale, and this creation echos those features while incorporating Rickenbacker styling and performance - very nice!
Andy - congratulations, and please give us a full review once you've had a chance to do a "test drive"!
