Brian, I can't think of another Rick bass that has all black hardware but no black trim (other than the TRC). You have quite a unique 4004L there! :D

PS How do you keep it so clean?

I think the black fretboard seals the deal but I love the black hardware and chrome screws for some light contrast. The hardest part was getting the p/u trim.....if I ever get around to locating one more I may swap my LK to black trim for something different (since this Laredo is getting an overhaul I have two trim rings available and need a thrid for the LK).

It never looks that nice in person for long.......just lucky with the lighting, angles and camera for once.

Finally took some pics of my 4003JGBT:

I bought this one off of Phlemmy. Apparently it was made for the Japanese market. The most unusual feature is the 7-screw tailpiece, which seems to have been stock. I like the silver lettering on the TRC - not sure if that's stock on these or not, though I think it is. Oh, and it's a 2004.

I just recorded with it for the first time last night - sounds great - I'll probably start a thread for it at some point, or just post some samples here.

That black on black is gorgeous. Almost makes me want to get a Jetglo, but only if I could get the BT option...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

The Autumnglos and Walnuts are interesting because they seem to be some of the only ones that offered black plastic without necessarily having black hardware, or even black binding! My '76 Autumnglo on the previous page only has black pickguard and TRC with cream binding on both neck and body, while ajish4's '81 has black binding on the body and cream binding on the neck.

Veering back in the ALL (well, almost all) black direction, I put my two JG BTs next to each other:

Not the greatest pics (iPhone camera in low light) but you get the idea. '93 4003S/8 & '04 4003. Some subtle differences, some not so subtle. Can you pick them out?

And in the meantime, here's a rough mix of an improv we recorded the other night:

driving the bus

The 4003 through a Budda PhatBass distortion and Alembic F2-B preamp, Greg DeGuglielmo on drums, recorded at Oxbow Studios in Marlborough, MA.

Chrome neck p/u surround on the S/8 and black on the 4003. Thicker body horn (bass side) on the S/8.

Actually, the 4003S/8 has a toaster in the neck position, and I got one of the plates from Pickguardian for the bridge pickup, while the 4003 has the original black bridge pickup surround.

Yeah, the difference in horns blew me away! I like both. Is this due to the difference between the 4003 and 4003S or did the 4003 develop during that time too?

An interesting similarity between the two is that they both have the seven screw tailpiece. Originally I was going to put vintage knobs on the 8-string, but now I like the fact that both have the standard knobs - nice contrast with almost everything else being black.

Um, yes, but it's still the difference between a chrome and a black neck p/u surround, even though on a toaster I guess you'd call it a p/u cover instead of a surround. My eyes weren't sharp enough to spot that little metal part that makes it a toaster. Point taken!

It would be interesting if RIC made a 4003 fretboard with black triangles instead of white, kind of like the black fretboard block inlays on some of the early 70s Jazz basses. That would make your 4003 even more unique!

Nice basses! 8)
