The Gates Of Delirium

Post by miguelbass »

Hello Friends,

I've been spending all of our National Holiday editing and creating some illustrations for my latest clip - part one of The Gates of Delirium.
As I said before, this is the Yesshows version - my "official" favourite.

Hope you like it - this has been something I worked on for some weeks, as I really never had attempted to play it before with this degree of detail, although many of those details were imprinted in my head after so many listens.

I invite you to visit

Greetings to you all

Miguel.

If I may be so bold, YOUR BEST WORK YET!

This is one of my FAVORITES! I'm blown away with Chris' work during this period.

I'm back to watch it again.

You truly have a gift. I'm SO happy the lighting you used in this clip allows me to see where you are putting your fingers! I also loved your Amazing Grace (I'm still trying to get that one buttoned up)....I'll be working on this one for MONTHS!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH...the video quality is killer and if you don't mind...I'm off to steal...um.....BORROW.... your secrets!

You do the Master proud!

Hello Tony (and Friends)

I had to re-upload it now - copiright troubles, and i did some tweaking on the sound as well.
The lighting is different cause it was one of the few clips I shot during daylight :))
Take all info as you wish - it's great fun to play!

I will post the new link now, maybe it can be edited by Jim (?) on the original post? (edit: link corrected jb)

Dayum....   Talk about channeling... I am always impressed how you completely immerse yourself in the piece; you are THERE.

Miguel, this work has always been a favorite of mine and you have it down! Any chance you'll film the rest of it?

Awesome, my friend.

Hi Miguel,

Yep, link is corrected as you requested. I haven't had a chance to review your latest posting and want to wait until I have time to really absorb it. "Gates" is a true masterpiece from Yes that severely pushed the envelope.

If these were Medieval times, we would honor you with a parade and celebration for slaying the dragon! I just wish your guitar counterpart would emerge to give us the same level of excellence in transcribing Steve's parts (along with Peter & Trevor). Is there such a person?

I have been dropping little hints that the time may be right soon for all of this music to be properly notated, tabbed and performed from an educational standpoint, while the original composers are still around to give their approval. There are so many "wrong" or "close, but not close enough" tabs out there and my ear is just not good enough to nail these parts exactly as they were written. We have Miguel and Pete covering Chris Squire's parts, almost to a tee, but I'm to the point where I need to learn both parts when I learn a song. Guitar Pro had a decent guitar / bass tab of Heart of the Sunrise, from which I was able to do a decent study of both parts, but, for instance, the opening solo of Close to the Edge still escapes my ear. I can play the guitar part, but there are phrasings of Steve's, very important to the correct feel and sound that I still can't nail down.

It has been years of fun trying, however! Thanks again Miguel, and yes, I'm still trying!

I'm speechless! How long do we have to wait for part 2?

Also, as a video editor, I appreciate your work with the green screen. Nice touch!

Alright, Miguel, your work has again left me inspired. It is very helpful for those of us learning these pieces, not only to see your finger postions, but also your audio mix - very well done, how all parts can be heard, yet the bass just seems to sit on top of the track.

This piece, to the untrained ear, can sound disjointed and ever chaotic, but when studied in detail, the parts, especially Chris's basslines, are very musical and complimentary to the overall music. I for one am looking forward to the rest of the track.

Now, I hope your understanding of the English language and American culture will allow you to fully appreciate the following challenge: I double-dog dare you to transcribe and tape the entire "Close to the Edge" album! :D

Um, look in the mirror and you'll find him!

I've heard you play Jim....I KNOW you can do it.

Lets see, i'ts June....lets work on it JUST IN CASE you mozy around these parts again in the fall!

I MIGHT have it down by then!

Between Miguel & Pete, we should be able to get all the documentation we need!

Miguel -

Well done! Always been a favorite of mine, and you certainly have it nailed.

You've motivated me to dust off GoD - hope I don't pull a muscle

Yes, great job! Great tone too! Can you describe your amp setup, etc.?
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

here's a quick report while I haven't changed the knobs on the sansamp

level - halfway
blend - max
treble -between 2 and 3 o'clock
bass - 2 o'clock
presence - between 1 and 2 o'clock
drive - between 11 and 12 o'clock

note : sansamp knobs min is at 7 o'clock and max is 5 o'clock.

the sections where I used a slight fuzz was a freeware plugin from Auraplug, which is really not too similar to Chris effect. That was slightly mixed in using a parallel track copy.

Pickup switch at center position and all knobs full open.

Oh and yes I want to do the rest of "Gates" :)

Get back to you soon - many thanks for your warm responses!
