Odd warranty card issue... anyone else seen this?

Post by kenf »

I was a good boy and mailed my 660/12 warranty card a few days after purchase on 5/20. I wanted proof of mailing and delivery for my own protection, so on the advice of the Post Office I put the card in an envelope and sent it Registered Mail.

Today I get the whole thing back stamped "REFUSED".

Huh?

Has anyone else seen this before? I think a call to Santa Ana is in order.

I'm very concerned because I am now outside the ten day window... When I registered my new 650D back in '05 I sent the card UPS Second Day since we had a cheap corporate deal for shipping, and that never came back refused.

I seem to remember someone else having that sort of issue. I think the eventual reason was something about RIC not taking registered mail for some reason...

Ah, there it is, it was certified mail:

I'm fairly sure that if you send it in with the explanation, they'll take it even though it's after the 10 day period.

Hmmm. I couldn't have put "Attn: Warranty Registration" any plainer on the front. Plus, John Hall himself recommended using a tracked service in viewtopic.php?f=3&t=145217:
Make a copy of the card, and mail the original to us, preferably using a tracked service. Keep your receipt along with the card copy and your half of the card for your future reference.

Who knows? I'd call RIC on Monday morning and talk to customer service, just to let them know what's going on...

I will - I suspect this is just a mistake on the part of their mailroom. I just don't want to lose warranty coverage because of it.

And it was Certified, not Registered like I originally stated - I just looked again.

It is standard for them to refuse certified mail.

OK, I talked to Customer Service today. Yes, their policy is to refuse Certified Mail (!) unless they can identify what it is. For some reason the big "ATTN: WARRANTY REGISTRATION" escaped the person that refused the envelope. Twice.

I'm resending it another way, and all appears to be well.

TIP for the future:

Just send it "ordinary" First Class Mail, and write "WARRANTY CARD" on the outside of the envelope, below the address.

I sent mine ordinary First Class mail, but didn't write WARRANTY CARD on the outside... I hope it got to the right place.

I find it interesting that the warranty card is designed as a pre-addressed "post card" that you just stick a stamp to and mail, but in the instructions you are told to send a copy of your sales receipt. I wonder how many people just send it in post card style? I wonder if that means they really have no warranty coverage?

Paul, for most companies I'd do this, but with RIC's policy of no warranty for unregistered instruments I must have some kind of proof they received the card. Plus, I *did* indicate it was a warranty registration in the address of the envelope and it still got refused (which appears to have been an error on the part of RIC's mailroom).

No harm in this case, but I'll feel better once I have proof of delivery in hand.

Only in combo form with a DVD player! And even those are becoming obsolete!
