Live at the Hollywood Bowl
Recall that Capitol Records released this compilation (vinyl) from the '64 and '65 shows many years afterwards.
But I don't recall ever seeing Hollywood Bowl released in CD format. Do any Beatles-experts know why it was never upgraded and re-released in CD format ? (Referring to official EMI-Apple-Capitol releases - not Bootlegs).
Thanks.

Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
Probably was just one of those albums that George, Paul and Ringo in '87-'89 (while they were mastering everything else in the offical catalouge) just weren't proud of?
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
I've always love this album. Fantastic for the crowd noise and giving the feeling of being there. Twist & Shout segueing into She's A Woman has always been a favorite of mine.
The recording of the band is pretty darned good, too, much better than most of the bootleg-type recordings we hear.

Agree Andrew! I actually had the bootleg prior to the official release. I believe both records came from the same tapes. Considering the tech. from those days, a fantastic recording and clearly a very tight rock n roll band!
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
My mom actually has the original '77 release, I find this album seems to smoke "Got Live if You Want It!" by The Stones, but is a little behind "Live at Leeds" by The Who
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
That's probably because "Got Live If You Want It" should be called "Got Live Sound Effects for Studio Tracks" in a lot of cases. The Beatles "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" is one of the best Beatles albums that I have. It's probably one of the most fun to listen to because of the energy. Comparing it to the Who live is a case of apples and oranges.JakeK wrote:My mom actually has the original '77 release, I find this album seems to smoke "Got Live if You Want It!" by The Stones, but is a little behind "Live at Leeds" by The Who

I also had the 1977 release, and it was a favorite then, as it is now. I found the original acetate recordings on isohunt.com recently, it contains a few songs not on the '77 record.......yes, it was a record back then!!
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
There also is video footage from the '64 show, "All My Loving" appears in The Beatles' "Anthology" DVD set.
The Hollywood Bowl soundtrack seemed better than Shea Stadium (whose soundtrack should be called "Got Live Sound Effects with Studio Recordings") to George Martin that he actually used "Twist and Shout" for the Shea Stadium film. It's also one of those rare chances one gets to hear "Things We Said Today" live, often, I thought it was John on the harmony vocals, but the Bowl shows that George did it live.

I have this bootleg, it kills:

Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
Also on youtube at present is the raw unedited footage of the Shea Stadium concert, complete with original audio. No wonder they heavily edited it.
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
I don't think the Beatles controlled whether this was released or not. They certainly wouldn't have loved the "Love Songs" compilation and they wouldn't have approved that either. Hollywood Bowl sold quite well and wasn't bad considering the noise. This would be a compilation I would like to see on CD.JakeK wrote:Probably was just one of those albums that George, Paul and Ringo in '87-'89 (while they were mastering everything else in the offical catalouge) just weren't proud of?
I think the bootleg version prompted Capitol to release their version of it.

Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
Boy, that record defined my summer when it came out. So much excitement and energy; my friend and I were kids and it was a 'new' Beatles album being released in our lifetime. I played it to death. It should be be re-released as a wonderful document of that period. I guess the downside was all the theme packages of varying success that came out afterwards (Love Songs, Beatles at the Movies, etc.)
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
i have a bootleg of the 64 concert called live at whiskey flats......
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
I have Whiskey Flat too..... it a boot of their 8/18/65 Atlanta gig.
Hollywood Bowl exists in 8-track.... this must be four times better than stereo because 8 is 4X2, right?
Re: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
How the hell did you score that? I have a boot of "Meet the Beatles!" on CD in stereo in that same fashion...my mom bought it for me when I was 10. I still have it.kennyhowes wrote:
