I have tried a different cable. Ironically the bass amp at the rehearsal was the same spare head I have in my basement. Peavey mark III. When plugged into that its very loud. They both had the grounding plugs. When plugged into my GK it's loud, but not as loud. I did try a different bass and thats quiet. I have a gig tonight, so I will try it out there. But yes I believe something is wrong. Just weird because all I did was pull out the Bartolini (which was quiet) and put in the Ric pickup.

Pick Of The Ricks

Chris Clayton is the owner and the person who you will deal with. He's a great guy, you'll be very pleased.

Well, I got my 79 rick back from Chris Clayton from Pick of The Ricks yesterday. He's been busy. Unfortunatley, he couldnt find the problem. Hum is still loud. He replaced the output jacks. Went over the grounds etc.. He said some of these year basses just tend to be noisy. Single Coils. It's loud hum. I could live with a little hum. I researched and found that I probably need to purchase some kind of noise gate. Either a ISP Decimator or a Boss NS-2 noise suppressor. Anyone have any expierence with these. I you tubed people giving Demo's of these and it looks like exactly what I need. Cuts the hum right out. ISP seems to not affect the tone at all. Or the attack. I was also told to check out a Hum Eliminator. But I'm not sure that will work for single coil pickup issues.

demo of the isp decimator. my hum is much louder than his too.

Do you know if Chris tried replacing the pickups?

No he didnt. Which I was a little suprised by, but i figured he had his reasons. He did look out the grounds on them. The bridge pickup was just put in not long ago. Because the bass came with a Bart pickup. I found a brand new 2006 ric bridge pickup. The neck pickup is original.

I can't really imagine why the pickups themselves would be a problem, but who knows? I assume he had the hum problem with whatever amp setup he was using too? I recently changed my amp/rack setup and now have a big hum problem with basses that were dead quiet before (even my 4004 with hum buckers). I know it's a ground issue, I just haven't had time to track it down...
