I'm okay with it, so long as the end is quick, and the rock hits either Kim Jong Il's palace, Osama's cave, or or Mymood Iminajihad's house first so I can savor the moment.

I suppose it's only right that the moon ends up back where it started. But it'll be a while before that happens...
Now, it'll only be about 20 years, Friday April 13, 2029, when a big hunk of space rock comes hurtling by the earth. Current estimates say it won't hit us, but it'll pass closer than our geosynchronous satellites. They don't think it'll hit those either, so your TV programs are probably safe. It's less certain what'll happen when it comes back for a second try in 2036, oddly enough on April 13 again, which is Easter Sunday...

but we don't have to worry - doesn't the Mayan calendar say the end is at 2012???? or is it i slip on a bannana peal and die next year... man I always get that stuff mixed up...

Re: Latest news:The Moon will crash into the Earth
If we are all going to die in a cataclysmic event lets make sure we all go with a bang.Until that moment arrives lets enjoy what we have here maybe we all could ride on the moon? gotta love the Wah

Re: Latest news:The Moon will crash into the Earth
If we weren't a "Type 0" Civilization we could avoid things like that.
A Type I civilization is one that controls the energy resources of an entire planet. This civilization can control the weather, prevent earthquakes, mine deep in the [home planet's] crust, and harvest the oceans. This civilization has already completed the exploration of its solar system.
A Type II civilization is one that controls the power of the sun itself. This does not mean passively harnessing solar energy; this civilization mines the sun. The energy needs of this civilization are so large that it directly consumes the power of the sun to drive its machines. This civilization will begin the colonization of local star systems.
A Type III civilization is one that controls the power of an entire galaxy. For a power source, it harnesses the power of billions of star systems. It has probably mastered Einstein's equations [or rather "Uiniversal Energy Field control"] and can manipulate space-time at will.

Re: Latest news:The Moon will crash into the Earth
Actually, the moon is moving away from the earth.
Scott, thanks for the reminder of Space 1999 ... the pilot episode had this spoken line: "We may be sitting on the biggest bomb ever made!" ... turned out to be self-referential!
December 21, 2012, IIRC ... also the same date that the I Ching 'cycle' (or whatever it's called) comes to an end.ram wrote:but we don't have to worry - doesn't the Mayan calendar say the end is at 2012???? or is it i slip on a bannana peal and die next year... man I always get that stuff mixed up...![]()

Or, it could harness the energy of its galaxy's black hole ('zero point energy'), which would be equivalent (or even greater).clearblue wrote:... A Type III civilization is one that controls the power of an entire galaxy. For a power source, it harnesses the power of billions of star systems. ...

If it does crash into the Earth, it truly will be exiting (it might even be exciting...)jps wrote:I have my camera ready to document the event. This should be really exiting!
Ka is a wheel.
Re: Latest news:The Moon will crash into the Earth
If that happens we'll all be exiting ... together!
All I wanna do is rock!

A Type IV civilization is one that controls the power of the beings they elect and naturally would invest in free healthcare for every being on there planet.Oh and owns at least one rickenbacker too.clearblue wrote:If we weren't a "Type 0" Civilization we could avoid things like that.
