Newby - first Ric 4001CS

Hi all,

After some 15 years or more of wanting one, i finally took the plunge and parted with a large chunk of my (banks) money and am now the proud owner of number 591 4001CS





Been having a good read of the Anatomy threads - excellent resource.

One observation on mine - the horseshoes on mine all but touch, whilst others have quite a gap, is this adjustable?

Hard to pick a better first Ric than the CS. Besides looking awesome, they happen to be incredible players with awesome sound. To my ears, they sound better than Squire's actual bass.

I'm in the UK.

Previously I've only briefly played a 4001 once many years ago in a shop, and at the time chose a Stingray over it, so i cant compare it to other Rics, but i find the neck reasonably fast, and the small body suits me well as i'm not a big guy, and in that respect the smaller scale suits me too.

It will be going through an SVT, but i havent had the chance to really crank the volume yet so i'm still finding the settings i like.

I also intend to use it, its about 98% mint and i hope to keep it that way, but use it. The finish is very thin though!

There are screws underneath the pickup that should let you adjust the horseshoes a little bit.

I used to obsess about getting a CS. I'm so happy with my 4003s now that I don't want one as much, but nevertheless every time I see a good example I have to stop and take notice. Nice.

I see a couple people here have recommended loosening the screws behind the pickup, sliding the horseshoes apart, and then re-tightening them.

If that isn't enough for you, you can actually remove, bend, and replace the horseshoes. This one had it's shoes spread wider: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=389178&start=0

Contact Jeffrey Scott and I'm sure he's be able to direct you to a thread here explaining how he did it.

Congratulations on the CS.
Dont worry about the finish unless you want to hang it on the wall.
But dont put it on a black rubber guitar stand or wear an unwashed brand new black t shirt at a sweaty gig though.
Like I did.......!!!
The clearcoat finish is really prone to staining.
Sounds....
Get that SVT cranked up,(at your local airport maybe) set the eq fairly flat with plenty of drive on the front end and then mess around with the
pick up volumes to get to the point where you can get the most volume out of both pick ups without one over powering the other.
Switch to single pick up mode and see what tones you can get find ones you like best and then just mix and match.
I dont know what type of music you play but the 4001 is pretty versatile for tones.
Your SVT is the best thing to plug a Rick into.
