The Who Sell Out -- Deluxe Edition

Post by JakeK »

Hey gang,

Just found out on The Who's official website forums that the classic '67 album "The Who Sell Out" is now available in a 2-disc Deluxe Edition. Features the stereo and mono mixes of the original album, and alternate tracks of the albums songs. Also is a May 1967 recording of "Summertime Blues" (an October '67 recording is featured on "Odds and Sods", but that's not what appears here). I haven't bought it yet, but if I hear about the alternate version of "I Can See for Miles" (with a loud, trebly bass part), then I'll buy it. If the alternate mix of "Miles" is not there, I'll consider buying it.

Maybe extra tracks included by offering alternate and extended mixes of numerous tracks from the "It's Hard" LP.    ;)

Thanks for posting the info Jake; sounds like a good one to buy.

Jake, thanks for the head's up! Looks like this edition came out today, in fact. I'll have to pick this one up ASAP.

After it's Stateside release date of June 2, 2009, I haven't found one anywhere...

...until today

Yup, at a New Orleans Barnes and Noble, I was finally able to track down a copy, and immediately bought it. If anyone owns the original stereo and/or mono LPs, you've basically got the mixes presented in this set. The bonus tracks are worth listening to, as well. The album has been remixed (from the original mixes) almost as if you're listening to it on the radio. (serious compression, perhaps?)

I like the 1995 reissue, and I like this. Both in different ways. They are both excellent remasterings of an excellent album, but if I had to keep one, I'd choose the '95 remaster.

But all in all, it was a good buy, and on my way to pick up some strings for my 1997SPC this evening, I'll be listening to it. Also plan to pick up the "Woodstock" 40th Anniversary set from Wal-Mart.

Today is so Who-filled!

To my Who obessed friends (Collin!!!), have you been lucky to obtain this version, yet?

I have it and was a little disappointed with the mixes. The compression isn't kind to the reverb tails on the album, and I wish some of the trendy hard panning of the drums was remedied on this release. It feels like they just threw a blanket of compression on the earlier CD release, without doing much else.

I don't know, Wes. I A/B/C'd all the "Rael" mixes. First the 1995 mix. Then listening to the Deluxe Edition stereo mix, sounded a semitone down from the '95 mix. Then the mono mix, sounded a semitione up from the '95 mix. Also, a line in the first verse of "Rael" (both stereo and mono) on the Deluxe Editon was edited, apparently the original LP featured a small portion edited out. Something in "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere: The Complete Chronicle of The Who" said that the tape got thrown away and the section with that line was damaged. The '95 version was mastered from an early mono mix and a separate vocal/snare drum overdub (that early mix is presented in mono on the new '09 Deluxe Edition).

Alan Kooper (Bob Dylan's keyboardist the previous two years for "Bringing It All Back Home", "Highway 61" and "Blonde on Blonde") remembered the engineer showing the damaged tape to Pete. Pete got so ****** he threw a big rolling desk chair threw the window separating the control room and the studio itself!

Pete and the engineer say it never happened. Pete probably said, "Al's full of s*it!"
