I can't get myself to part with that much money for a set of strings.

I use LaBella flats on all my Ricks and I am very happy with them. They are lower tension strings protecting my necks and they are much more comfortable to play as well, yet they still give me the Rick "growl". I will stick with them.

this was my experience with flats on my 4000. it sounded really great actually, but i like the rw sound WAY more......

The '74 I recently picked up has flats - don't know what kind of mileage is on them but they sound great.

Yep, I sure did...Those are Thomastik Jazz Flats! All my older RIC girls get them!

That set is about, .......9 months old, they have very little time on them when I sold it to Scott so they should last a L O N G time....I STILL have the box they came in so if you want the gauges, let me know. I liked them so much, I kept it just to make sure I order more of the same!

TIs do sound fantastic but I had to switch to D'As for the slight extra tension (I used a small gauge) to correct a bit of backbow. Going back to TIs some day, me hopes. But the D'As record sooo much better. I just don't like the brightness inherent in them.

I still have my original TI set... TIs can take a beating and still be reinstalled.

I've got D'Addario Chrome Flats on a lot my basses, but I recently ordered two sets of TI Jazz Flats to try on my Jetglo 4001S (avatar) and also one of my short scale Hagstroms. You can get short scale TI's pretty easily from bass emporium with quick ship. I'd been reading posts on this forum and the corporate forum about how great the TI's are, so why not? The Chromes also don't seem to age as well as others.

I also have a 1982 Mapleglo 4003S (same year as the Jetglo 4001S) with flats that I bought from ebay. I'd love to know what strings are on that puppy! I tried to find out. I really like them, but can't see a way to ID them short of taking a close-up image and seeing if anyone here can figure it out from the winding pattern - not likely.
