Is it different with guitars?
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

We're freaks like that, Nate.

That being said, you'll notice that only one of these four basses of mine are stock:

I think a lot of folks who cherish the old vintage guitars hold the stock condition in high regard. I wasn't opposed to modding my post-74 basses, but I'd never dream of modding my '68 or '64. That's just where I draw the line, others may have varying lines of distinction.

In a lot of cases with basses from the 60's & early 70's, the mods were done within only a few years of the guitar's production before the concept of "Vintage" even applied. I have to assume that nobody back then was giving consideration to appreciation-over-time, or saw any value in "stock condition."

My remarks concerning RC's bass were pretty much tongue-in-cheek, really. We kid around a lot here.

Well there are the purists.... for just about anything. I think most of us see the Ric as so near perfect that something that alters the looks is seen as ....’why?’ I don't think most trash the decision... after all it is the owner property, but as I say 'just not my cup of tea'. Personally as long as a they is done correctly (i.e., without chainsaw and pick-ax) I don't have much problem with mods. But don't ask anyone who doesn't like it or understand it to say that they think it’s great or not to ask what the motivation was.... the aesthetics are in the eyes of the beholder. That's my stab at the question.

Ric, I love the caption to your picture... your face made me think that before I saw it... so what year is the bass? do you have any recordings you could post of what it sounds like? Did you do the mod with the pick up? if so what made you think of it (did you see one somewhere....?)? what does the second switch do? enquiring minds want to know! BTW - the bass looks sweet!

Thanks John! You're right, it was perfect for the 4th - so perfect that it was nearly stolen at a 4th of July pool party the next day. But all is well, the suspect was easy to locate.

Me, with this 4003FG, El Rey Theater, L.A., November 26, 2008. (The Records, opening for Matthew Sweet.) Best shot I have, I'm afraid. Great night, though.

And yes, Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson performed with Matthew, and no, unfortunately Ms. Hoffs didn't bring any Rics with her, but who cares?!

Here I am with my 360/12 in San Diego. I've flirted with some other guitars, but I keep coming back to this one. I think I've accepted it now! :)
