TLA LIST/Glossary PLEASE?

Someone shared with me what COY was, now I don't know what NOS is.

Is there a way the moderators could put their heads together and come up with an RRF Glossary to help the newbies (such as myself) stop having to scratch our heads so much? Might be nice to have it as a sticky post in the Help Forum.

I've heard it referred to as both "New Old Stock" and "New Original Stock".

Oh, and "POS" as used on the forum stands for "Piece of S**t", rather than the retail sales designation of "Point of Sale".

Robert, NOS means, 'new old stock'.

I think that thread might have been prompted when I asked for definitions of various RIC abbreviations used in the Register. Anyway, I think some sort of sticky thread for acronyms (Alphabetically Concatenated Rendering Of Names Yielding Meaning) would be a great idea.

I happen to stumle onto that one, CJ. It's just a small portion of the abbreviations though.

Ok, so what, exactly does "New Old Stock" mean? Is it like my 4001 purchased from a Nevada retailer as NEW in 1988 that has a manufacture date of 09/1982? Is it a "new" instrument that's sat around in a shop unsold for a long time?

NOS usually refers to old vintage parts that have never been used.

Generally, it means a "new" old item that's never been sold and has been sitting on a shelf somewhere. But, people "stretch" the meaning all sorts of ways...

That's for sure. Liberties are often taken with the term, NOS.

I first encountered NOS in the vintage car biz, back around '71 or so. But I'd bet it goes back a lot longer. It was used by car dealers to classify their parts stock when culling their SKUs.

One irony about Rickenbackers and the NOS designation has to do with the warranty. IIRC, the RIC warranty is one year/finish, 5 years/mfg. defect, with both time periods calculated from the date of mfg., not the date of purchase. Therefore, even if you buy a "brand new" Rick from an authorized RIC dealer, depending on how long its been since it left the factory, it may be out of either one or both of the warranty periods. This is more likely than not with an NOS item.

Then you're SOL.

My dad, who sold cars for...ever, used the term back in the '60's. Never knew it would relate to anything I had an interest in decades later. The term probably goes back even further, like you said.

So, does this mean that someone has a compliled alphabetized list??? Or does one have to go through an entire thread and pull bits and pieces out of it all?

If no one had done it already, I'd be happy to do just that and prepare an excel spreadsheet and forward it to the moderators so it can be formatted to use in the forum...

As far as I know, there's no real complete list. The most complete one I've ever seen is on a page in the "Measure your girth" spreadsheet:

Which would also be a nice thing to have easily referenced somewhere. I always have to go back to the "Measure your girth" thread and search for the address...
