My old amp rig

Back in MY day (mid '70s), I had one of those (on the far left, I think). The Acoustic 370 head and the folded single 18" speaker cab (collectively known as the 371). I loved the caution sticker on the back: "Caution: Sound levels may exceed 120 Db within six (or was it 10 or 12) feet of this cabinet." The cab had wheels and inset handles, so it was easy to move, but not to lift. I think only the Ampeg SVT was heavier. Those were the days.

The race continues: Phil Jones Bass 24B box (bottom right): over 170 pounds / 128dB at 10 feets/2400W

How do you like the EBS preamp?

ebs preamp was there with Ampeg SVT-IIP on the start of experiment.


I mixed both preamps in the custom build tube mix HOT.
ebs sounds very distingue, I own this preamp yet, but I cannot find right tone for my ears. Very good solution, if You like clean tones, play slap, tapping, etc... I needed something else.

I rebuilded all to Sans Amp + PJB P1 combination.


Sans Amp substituted the Ampeg SVT very easy and added more versatility. PJB is the killer, unfortunately killed own graphic EQ section as well and now is waiting for the repair.

The last verison is Sans Amp with Warwick Jonas Hellborg preamp.


Warwick JH has special loop in/out with trimming and routing the wet/dry signal, something like small mixer inside, so I eliminated the tube mix and connected SansApm to Hellborg preamp. Hellborg can bring clean tones like ebs and wide spectrum of colors, thanks + - 18db equalization. Sans Amp does the rest. I can use Rick o sound box, or split the signal from any bass using Lehle ABY i my pedalboard

I didn´t try JH power amp, I needed more wattage to feed hungry PJB boxes. QSC is not bad power amp, more than 3kW and 9 kg only!
BTW: In my pedalboard You can see another Jonas Hellborg piece - his personal ebs UniChorus. He offered this pedal anonymous on eBay and I bought it for average price! After the end of the auction we exchanged personal data and he confirmed, he is THAT Jonas Hellborg

I liked the Acoustic heads, but generally used them with Sunn 118VH horn cabinets. For best listening, I preferred to use them in "headphone" mode. Tinnitus anyone?

I never liked those Acoustics although I've heard some people make them sound very good, they were boomy and anemic sounding up close, not a lot of treble due to the fact that highs don't like to go around corners, they were great for big stages though, those folded horns threw the sound, SVT's on the other hand sounded great right next to them, punchy. I still have two SVT set ups.
