What is this for a bass?

Post by berth »

This one is for sale in Holland. And I'm wondering what it is. I see CB. I see just 1 input (no ROS). Could this be a pre 70ties Rick, or is it a faker, or what?

The binding looks authentic, the full-width crushed inlays, slotted tooth on the bridge and the green treble pickup look good also (when were these used to replace of the horseshoe?). Does the binding continue under the tailpiece? If so, that's a no-no. What looks odd is the darkness of the fingerboard. TRC probably replaced as it doesn't say "Model 4001" on it.

She's been around the block more than once though. Anyone with a comment on the fingerboard?
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

I did not have any plans to buy a Rickenbacker bass. But I'm having serious doubts right now. Besides, I dont have a february Rick yet.... ;-)

It's pretty cool and rare, no doubt. Could be a bit of a project if you want to restore it, but maybe a great sounding player. I'd advise to try to see it in person, in any case. Is the price good?

750 Euro's before she recieved lots of mail about it's value probably being a lot higher. Now she is going to raise the asking price. But she is not sure to what. Any ideas over here what the real value is for a Feb '69 Rick in "well used" state?

Double would be a good deal even here, I'm guessing. In Holland it's a no-brainer. Of course, a restoration would be expensive.

Hmm... "Black Beauty"... :) I believe every appointment on that particular 4001 to be period-accurate, down to the TRC. As for the fingerboard being unusually dark, well, it sure looks to be covered in a thick layer of dirt. No?

Snap it up, someone! 8)

Well, it's old and cool, even if it has been through some serious wear and tear. It appears there is FG paint underneath the headstock chips, so you would have to think refin. Interesting to see that it still has Klusons and not Grovers, like my old Feb 69. The board is probably just a real dark rosewood. It may have lost the lacquer, so possibly a refret too. I've seen a few this darker shade, and they do make the inlays look good. A clean, as Sergio says, is probably in order too!

Not many in Europe, and difficult to put a price on this therefore. Is it an auction format?

It is on Marktplaats (a Dutch Ebay daughter). You can find the ad over here. Unlike Ebay there is no ending date with the auctions. Current highest bid (not mine, I'm still thinking) is 1800 euro.
