Les Paul. The man is legendary for lots of reasons, his innovations in recording, his uncanny knack for choosing a 'hit', his namesake guitar (and attendant contributions to electric guitar construction as we know it), and leastnot his unflagging love of playing music etc. It is that shining, brilliant guitar playing which has become a beacon for me in recent years and it is best showcased in instrumental compositions (an art which fewer and fewer players are championing, it would seem).
