Panoply of Ric Bass Sounds
Not to "bump" my post in the other forum, but bassists, please feel free to check out my website (accessible through post viewtopic.php?f=48&t=389946 ) and give me any criticism you feel any of the songs deserve. They are from a total of three sessions, which you should be able to hear. Just let me know what you think... I want to streamline my page for the sake of attracting good artists in Denver, if I can.
Thanks, low-downers.

Hi Josh I would have to say that Red Groove is my favorite. Not that I dislike the other stuff you've done, but I'm a big fan of songs similar to this one, and when I'm in "relaxation mode" I usually listen to music of this style. Its very good very clean. I love it. Nice work! Am I correct in assuming that you recorded Kombucha with your 4003FL? It sounds so silky yet agressive! amazing.

Re: Panoply of Ric Bass Sounds
Thanks for the positive comments Miles. I really appreciate your feedback too. Red Groove is "my kind of song" as well, partly because I wrote it, and perhaps also because my bandmates let me take the first solo. In fact, the guitarist didn't really even solo all that much; his rhythm part is cool in itself. The whole thing is a bit of a singular experience in a way and I feel like it's one of the better things I've done, although the outcome of that recording session as a whole left me wanting a bit more than I got out of it regarding bass tone. (Notice some of the dynamic flux on Hat Trick's "slap intro"... I wish that hadn't made it in!)
One of the artists I work with now says Red Groove reminds him of King Crimson; not sure which album he's hearing in comparison to it.
All the tracks except for Red Groove and Hat Trick were recorded with my 4003FL; different rigs and strings apply variously throughout. Those first two were recorded using my 2007 4003 with Curt Mangan strings fro PotR.
Also Miles, thanks for the kind words about Kombucha. Not everyone likes that tone but I think it fits in a vintage-y way. The 4003FL is a versatile instrument, I get lots of tones with it.
...Anybody else with feedback, including negative-but-constructive feedback, is encouraged to add their thoughts!

Re: Panoply of Ric Bass Sounds
Red Groove does have a nice feel to it, and both you and the guitarist have nice round tone. Good growl from the 4003FL too. There is a certain resemblence to Crimso; perhaps Lizard is the album he was thinking of (but there are Belew influences too; at least to my ear, so maybe the Discipline era). In any case, it's rather funny, because the guitar work reminds me of the guitarist in my band, and there's a certain amount of Fripp in much of what he plays (Crimso is his favorit band by far). So perhaps there's a "once-removed" thing going on here.
In any case, fine job.

Can we have everything louder than everything else?

I definitely love Red Groove too.
It makes me want to finally trash my ****** fretless and get a real one.

Re: Panoply of Ric Bass Sounds
Speaking of the fretless, I'm almost bewildered by how different it sounds not just within the different settings of the tone circuit but also when you switch strings. The D'A Chromes bring out very different things compared with the TIs; yes this always hold true for all instruments, but it's rarely this shocking to me. Compare the tone in Kombucha to the tone of my bass solo at the very end of LWYG. It's two different worlds entirely, although I'm pretty sure I like them both.
Re: Panoply of Ric Bass Sounds
I actually played your music at work today in the shop and one of the guys that was listening was getting into and he's "not usually into this style of music". Thought I might share that with you.
I was contemplating going with TIs when I signed up here but so far every flatwound string I've played just doesn't feel right to me unless its a Rotosound string. I guess they're my official string of choice haha

Re: Panoply of Ric Bass Sounds
Thanks Miles. Like I hinted at before I think D'A Chromes are the best flatwounds for me... they record the best, at least. TIs sound so authentically "jazz" but I find them more difficult to record than the D'As. I also find the D'As far more versatile. D'As are actually somewhere in between the Rotos monel flats and the TIs in my experience.
Glad your co-worker liked the music!
