Got Chrome?
Re: Got Chrome?
I don't use Google ... quite some time ago when I tried Google to search for something innocuous (IIRC, something work-related), the first two pages of hits were porn sites with spoofed keywords and titles/summaries. That experience soured me on Google and I never went back.

Re: Got Chrome?
Google has gotten much better than in the old days. You can even set up your search preferences for "safe" mode, which will cause it to ignore most of the "bad" sites. It's also gotten much harder to spoof the search engines. Since they make money from people paying to get their sites listed in the top few searches, they keep changing what it takes to get "found" in the top. It used to be simply the number of relevant terms in a few fields, so the porn sites just listed every word they could think of. It's not nearly as easy these days...

Re: Got Chrome?
I use Google every day and I literally never see pornsite ads. Not sure what settings I have on it but it works to my taste and usually gives me what I'm looking for in the first page.
I dunno about this chrome stuff, though, I'm a mac.

Re: Got Chrome?
But what do you know about Goggle Chrome? It is a new browser like Internet Explorer and Foxfire.Has anyone used it? Is it worth down loading?

Does Mac have it's own browser?kiramdear wrote:I use Google every day and I literally never see pornsite ads. Not sure what settings I have on it but it works to my taste and usually gives me what I'm looking for in the first page.![]()

I use Apple's Safari, but I could use Firefox as well. Safari is not quite as effective at blocking pop-ups as Firefox, but it's simpler to use. Opera for Mac is what my BF uses.

Re: Got Chrome?
I looked at Chrome, but I couldn't see any reason to switch to yet another browser. This was quite a while ago so I don't remember much about it. In general, I use Firefox since it's an open source type thing that has literally thousands of people working on fixes (I'm an old Unix guy, so I just feel more at home with that sort of environment
). I use Internet Explorer for some stuff at work that just doesn't work with Firefox. But enough on that, everyone has their opinions.
Back to Chrome, when I looked at it, I didn't see anything that really made me think, "This is gonna make the internet so much easier!", so I didn't look any further. I suspect that it has all sorts of background reporting to Google to let them know how people browse the web, ostensibly to help them give you a better experience both with the browser and with their search engines. Paranoid types can (and will) think what they may. If it does, Google seems to generally let you turn off that sort of tracking stuff (or so they say).
Bottom line, I'm happy with what I use and can't see much reason to change. If you decide to use it, let us know if there are any new whizzy features nobody should live without...

Re: Got Chrome?
Chrome is another browser.
In fact, it's a browser that Google has begun to build an operating system (like Windows) around.
It has some inherent security traits that make it unique but at this point in time, I don't see much use for it... mainly because it doesn't work with some of the apps I have at work. But then again, neither does any other browser other than IE.
It's different. That's all.
It's generally a good idea to have at least one other browser installed, though.
This way if there is something FUBAR'd about your main browser, you can always use the other one to try to get online and find a fix for the issue.

Re: Got Chrome?
OK I went and read up a little on Chrome. Seems they've come a ways since I last looked. It's an open source code base, with a lot of stuff pulled in from Firefox and some Apple WebKit stuff. I have to say, this sounds promising. Google has shown that they really do have the ability to turn out some seriously good code (unlike Microsoft, who spend all their time trying to beat crummy code into submission instead of just doing it right). I suspect that this may turn out to be one helluva browser. Being open source, once they get enough of a user/programmer base, it should really get good. I don't know if it really has anything that Firefox doesn't, but it's seeming to me that it might be worth checking out...

Re: Got Chrome?
I did forget to mention more about the OS that google is basing on Chrome.
They announced it last week. It'll be based on linux and running a Chrome OS. Primarily in netbooks, at first.
Once this gets off the ground, Chrome (the browser) will start to see a lot of market push.
I haven't tested it in Chrome but if it's like IE or firefox, they still don't get tabs correct. That may be because I've used Opera for nearly a decade and the tabs work flawlessly in Opera. Alt-Tab works the way it should, open tabs bring up the way it should, etc.
I say this because while it's a minor nitpick about IE and firefox, they do not work "right". So I find myself always going back to Opera.
I just checked. The tabs don't work right in Chrome either.

Re: Got Chrome?
I use mostly Firefox. And I never get porn on Google when I do a search though my filters are wide open. Time to expand your horizons again, Doctor...

Re: Got Chrome?
I'm happy enough with Camino and Safari to never have even looked at Chrome.

Thanks, CJ. I thought that it might have.cjj wrote:Google has gotten much better than in the old days ...
Reminds me of a story. Back when I worked at Gensia Pharmaceuticals, we used Macs but also had a Unix server (pre-Linux era ... Middle Pleistocene or thereabouts). The main IT fellow was a quiet but really nice guy, so I would greet him in the hallway with, "Hail, King of The Unix" ... he got the joke and actually was quite amused by it!cjj wrote: ... That is the most succinctly put description on Microsoft I have heard - priceless!
I am positive BG has never taken a bare hdd and loaded Windows on it. He still employs the programmers.
