Amp Of Choice

Post by nextcliffburton »

Hello! I'm currently running my 4001 through an Ampeg V-6B and a 6x10 cab, and it sounds pretty good. I was thinking about expanding and maybe trying out other amps, I've been a big Ampeg fan, but I've wanted to test Mesa Boogie, I tried a Mark II once and they sounded good with my schecter. What amps would you recommened take get the best growl, tone and fullnesss of the 4001's capabillity?

Thanks Dudes!

I like hearing my Rics thru a Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II. One day I'll buy one.

I want to demo a Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout 12. Might do that this weekend.
Because I told you before- oh, you can't do that.

Since you said Mesa I'd suggest you check out a 400+ and if you aren't happy with your 6x10 then give a Powerhouse 1200 a try.......I may be biased though!

Great full range with the ability to dial in plenty of dirt that doesn't kill the lowend. Can be crystal clear as well but what fun is that? Just a great solid all around rig.....the first time I have been truly happy with my tone.

Oh sure- give us all amp envy...good thing for all of us this is a heavily moderated G-rated forum. ;)

(By the way, your LK is missing some wood.)

For small gigs I use an Ampeg BA115HP. For larger gigs I use a Gallien Krueger 800RB thru a Hartke 410 and 215, biamped. That rig is more power than I have ever needed, has a great full bottom end and enough snap on the top to cover most situations.

For portability plus excellent sound, nothing beats a Markbass

If you have Olympic weightlifters in your group however, I highly recommend an all-tube vintage or classic SVT. You already have the correct cabinet.

Ya I need to get a better head, Not that the head I use now is bad, I love it but A Ampeg Tube Head would be awesome. This is my rig right now, Its a 70's Ampeg V-B6. I have two of them, one runnign through a 2x15 cab and a 6x10 cab. I'm testing out Bi-amping them with a A/b Switchbox this weekend for a big gig :]

In reading the literally hundreds of forum posts (on here and at Ric.com) regarding amps of choice, does anyone just use a combo amp as an on-stage monitor and just go directly into the house's sound board? I use a Sans Amp Bass Driver DI, parallel it to my Ampeg combo and then XLR it to the house's board. I get all the tone control I need out of the DI and I don't have to haul a huge stack to the venue.

I prefer my rick through a hiwatt. I have used a custom 200 watts much, but just laid my hands on a 400 watter. With a 2x15 reissue hiwatt cab or two the ricks really sings 8)

Sometimes I do that, and sometimes I just bring a preamp and go direct, using the PA's monitors to hear myself.

Well, that would be the proper thing to do, but I try to make up for my lack of ability by playing louder

Seriously, I saw the band Cake a few weeks ago, and their stage volume was so low, it just made their mix incredible.Bassist was definitely just going direct. Not sure if this is true, but I have heard that Def Leppard used to rehearse at such a low volume, the singer could sing without a PA. Theory was that volume just covered mistakes.
