5 New Tracks For My Portfolio--All Ric Bass

Post by cassius987 »

Because I'm moving to Denver I felt the need to compile some of my freelance material as a means of displaying some kind of credibility to potential new artists I encounter in the Mild High City (as someone here once put it). Please check them out. Your incentive: hear some different takes of what a Ric bass can sound like. I don't go for the traditional tone as much. My incentive in having you listen: more "listens" gives my profile extra credibility to any Denver artists checking me out. Add me as a friend too!

Here's a tracklist and description:

1 and 2 have been there for a long time and are relatively old tracks, recorded in 2007 with my ex-band. They're instrumentals. 2007 Rickenbacker 4003 --> Curt Mangan Strings --> Ashdown/Gas Cooker dual input pres --> Gary Smith engineering. I don't like his take on how the bass should sound as well as I hoped I would but it still sounds okay. It just wasn't "that sound" for me, like I'd hoped. I'd like to think the tracks themselves are still quite solid.

3. LWYG (acoustic): Me and ex-guitarist Adlar covering one of my own as a acoustic/fretless duo. The track is raw. The vocals last a while, then at 5:00 I take a solo that turned out a lot better than I thought it would for a single-take piece. Let me know what you think--going for an upright sound. 2008 Rickenbacker 4003FL --> D'Addario Chromes Strings --> Ashdown 1x15 cab --> Baby Blue condenser mic.

4. Falling Stars (acoustic): Another cover of our old material, but this one's Adlar's. Check out the breakdown at the end of the song and some of my ideas therein. Same specs as previous.

5. Kombucha (demo): This recording was an effort to get my good friend Kurtis Foster's material published. He's a gifted alto sax player. This is mostly a 1/5/1/5 kind of song on my part but I still loved playing it. 2008 Rickenbacker 4003FL --> Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Strings --> Ashdown 1x15 cab --> two-three room mics, models unknown.

6. Summer Groove (demo): While the aforementioned recording was for Kurtis's benefit, we snuck one of guitarist Keith Hayne's on there as well. This is said track. I take the last solo--let me know what you think! More of a fusion sound. Same specs as previous.

7. We Who See The Deep: A cover of the Black Crowes song that Adlar Roberson and I did while we were warming up, and the record button was on. It sounded solid so we kept it! 2008 Rickenbacker 4003FL --> D'Addario Chromes Strings --> Ashdown 1x15 cab --> Baby Blue condenser mic.

...Thanks again for listening and commenting. Any attention this gets will help give credibility to my page. Thank you. :)

Good stuff, Joshua, kind of what I think of as crossover genre, jazz, pop, groove, or what have you; labels are so limiting. Anyway I enjoyed your group of songs a lot and think they're very well put together, for purposes. I predict you should have no problem attracting some players of similar abilities with your MySpace page.

The last one was the most to my taste; was that you on all the vocals?

No, the vocals are Adlar Roberson. He's quite talented. I'm glad you liked that cover--it's one of our favorite 'Crowes tunes.

Oh and thanks for listening!!

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing them. Great bass tone! I need to get out a better headset so I can hear them better though, but even on my cheap set, they sound pretty good. :D
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Is there a way to download these and play them locally?

I like what I'm hearing here and just want to put them in my library.

I think I can make that permissible through the MySpace profile... I shied away from the idea at first but there can't be much harm in doing it. After I consult the other artists on some of the tracks for permission I'll let you know.

Thanks for checking. :)

Does this mean I would have to create a myspace profile?

I hope not. :(

Question, does my player look green now? I'm not sure what I did to change it but I also wonder if outsiders notice.

Yes, it is green. Which is not easy to be.

Tasteful stuff, Josh. Nice subtle, jazzy, influences in the several tracks I listened to.
Are you changing the string types constantly on your FL or did it just happen that you did the recordings over a broad spance of time, with normal string changes occuring ?
I wish you good luck on your expanding musical endeavors in Denver.
Regards

There are two string changes, one set being TIs and one set being D'A Chromes. And only one set of strings used per brand.

The sounds are just different because of pickup configs, technique, and recording methods employed.

Nice showcase, Joshua. Lots of great tones here. Nice to see that someone else appreciates the fretless tone of the 4001/4003.
