Favorite Non Harrison/McGuinn 12 String Licks
Favorite Non Harrison/McGuinn 12 String Licks
A good friend and VERY musical guy sent me this email so thought I would share...
The death last week of Paul Revere & the Raiders guitarist Drake Levin got me thinking of MY favorite non-Harrison/McGuinn ELECTRIC 12-string licks. Here are 10 in no particular order:
1. Kicks-Paul Revere & the Raiders: Levin's lick with Phil "Fang" Volk's "Satisfaction" bass line under it-MAGIC!
2. Turtles-She'd Rather Be with Me
3. Beach Boys-Help Me Rhonda: Maybe Carl Wilson; Maybe Glenn Campbell or Tommy Tedesco.
4. Tom Petty-The Waiting
5. The Searchers-Needles & Pins: I've heard that this was two six-strings played in octaves, but I consider it a 12 str. lick.
6. Stairway to Heaven-Like it or not, it HAS to be included.
7. Hotel California- Eagles. The only one so far that I DON'T play. Wish I did.
8. The Mavericks-Oh What a Crying Shame. Add Raul's voice & you got a classic.
9. The Hollies-Look Through Any Window
10. Something in the Air-Thunderclap Newman-written by Pete Townshend-what can I say.
I'm sure I've forgotten some-Let's Live for Today & Where Were You When I Needed You: Grass Roots for example. Let me know yours.

Echo and the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon"; simple, haunting, beautiful.

No particular instrumental comes to mind, but for me, the best would surely include something from Leo Kottke..
maybe .. Driving of the Year Nail, Vaseline Machine Gun, etc... going by memory here...
Also, does Phil Keaggy ever play a 12 string? I bet there would be some gems from him if he does..

Just happened to hear "Dead Man's Curve" while driving the other day. Epic! Lots of teen disaster/death songs back then!
Cranked it!
I'm not sure if the middle is a 12 or two sixers (sounds a bit like a 12). The talking part... 'Well, the last thing I remember, doc, I was starting to swerve...then I saw the Jag slide into the curve..." Anybody know if that's a twelver?
