Johnny Marr on his Rickenbackers

I was reading through some Johnny Marr interviews and I found a few Ric-related tidbits I thought I would share.

Firstly, here he describes his 'workhorse' as a 330 with a bigsby, which is strange because I have never seen a photo of him playing any Ric with a bigsby, or even playing any Ric live besides his 330 JG. I guess it's an error, but the rest of the interview is accurate, so it's odd.




Here's how he came to buy Pete Townsend's '62 RM 12 string:



And here he describes recording with 2 more of Pete's Rics :



And here he talks about his Ric which was previously owned by Roger McGuinn, which I didn't know about at all until I read it tonight.

Oh, I didn't know Manzanera played Ric! Tried to google it, but the only bit of info I could find is from official Ric forum:
"Phil Manzanera hired a 330 12 FG to use on the Roxy Music album Country Life in 1974. It is all over the record and he uses it in quite an unorthodox way -playing dirty leads and some lovely textured stuff. Prairie Rose and All I want is You benefit from it especially."

Does anybody know more?

Always come back to "Strangeways, here we come" a tremendous LP. A 3 minute opener like "A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours" blew a hole in the 80s at a time when music in the UK was yawning.Trouble was the rest of the eighties music that was delivered thereafter was still in a yawn.Naturally that is MHO.
Remember seeing Marr playing when he was in Electronic ( Glasgow and Manchester) and thinking how effortless and amazing he was at the same time.

I know what you mean about Johnny, Sarah, although Morrissey was never my cuppa, musically or otherwise ...

As a starter, I would also recommend either Hatful Of Hollow or Meat Is Murder. Hatful is an early album of b-sides and radio sessions, many of which are better than the album versions IMO.

Meat Is Murder is just such an awesome guitar record.. The Headmaster Ritual, Nowhere Fast, I Want The One I Can't Have etc... just great overlaid guitars, crazy tunings, and byzantine riffs.
