BEATLES: WHAT A CARVE-UP!

BEATLES WEEK! There back with a single, Paperback Writer and Rain, out tomorrow (Friday).

BUT WHAT’S THIS? The Beatles as butchers draped with raw meat! Disc and Music Echo’s world exclusive colour picture by Bob Whitaker is the most controversial shot ever of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

THE PLACE: A private studio in Chelsea, London. Whitaker is taking some new pictures of the Beatles, and decides that a new approach is needed.
"I wanted to do a real experiment - people will jump to wrong conclusions about it being sick," says Whitaker. "But the whole thing is based on simplicity - linking four very real people with something real." "I got George to knock some nails into John’s head, and took some sausages along to get some other pictures, dressed them up in white smocks as butchers, and this is the result - the use of the camera as a means of creating situations."

PAUL’S comment after the session: "Very tasty meat!"

GEORGE: "We won’t come to any more of your sick picture sessions"

JOHN: "Oh, we don’t mind doing anything"

RINGO: "We haven’t done pictures like THIS before..."

These orange & white Capitol promotional "teaser" stickers are among the earliest known items of Beatles memorabilia. The 3" x 2" stickers were designed to be placed by Capitol salesmen on "any friendly surface as you walk down the street". This was part of Capitol's initial January 1964 Beatlemania blitz to promote the release of the Meet The Beatles album and I Want To Hold Your Hand single. The stickers were made in large quantities in rolls of 250, and very few unused stickers exist today.

This compilation 7" tri-fold card has various LP ads and a photo of The Beatles. Inserted in magazines in 1964, the vinyl-coated middle section includes Roll Over Beethoven (The Beatles), Little Deuce Coupe (The Beach Boys), and The Saints (The Kingston Trio). This very difficult to find disc sells for up to $500 in near mint condition, and a little higher if the center spindle hole has not been punched. It is usually referred to by collectors as "The Kingston Trio flexi".

Here is the Capitol B-5439 unreleased picture sleeve for Leave My Kitten Alone, which first appeared in January 1985 in very limited quantities (collectors were originally told that only 10 of 85 total existing copies would be available). It was to be the first single from the aborted Sessions album. The sleeves were originally sold for prices above $600.00, until 1994 when 1500+ copies were "found", forcing the price below $100.00. Some suspect that the entire quantity of thousands existed initially, and the sleeves were slowly dispersed in order to keep the price and value/demand high, a not-uncommon practice in the bootleg & collectors world (similar to the Girl sleeve and the pirate Tollie EP). These limited sales went on with the Kitten sleeve for nine years before a large quantity was unleashed on the market.

This is the title sleeve that was issued with promotional copies of the VJ-581 single Please Please Me / From Me To You. It is one of the rarest of all Beatle sleeves and is currently valued at $2,500 in near mint condition.
