Why not just dial the volume back to 9 or such? Same thing.cassius987 wrote:iiipopes recommends sometimes putting a weak resistor in series with it, but he never mentioned a cap.johnallg wrote:Hmmm, never occurred to me.....fatcat wrote:Has anyone here tried putting the capacitor on the neck pickup,if so what did it sound like?

Not to be a jerk on you for having an idea Don but I like the full, natural sound of a bass, not the feeble and annoying sound of a .0047mf capacitor. So for me...there will be no cap on the neck pickup either.fatcat wrote:Has anyone here tried putting the capacitor on the neck pickup,if so what did it sound like?
Not trying to be a jerk (although sometimes it just happens naturally!), just putting in my $.02.
Brainstorming is good though!

Re: How can I get my treble pickup more bass?
Just bypassed the .0047 cap and MY GOD! My 4001 has so much more thunder to it! I'm testing it on a little peavy guitar amp and I can already tell it has more output! Cant wait to get home and test it out on my Ampeg Rig! Thanks for all the advice bro's! RIC ON!

I also bypassed the .0047uF on my 4001 (actually put in the tone switch), but on the 4003s with the magnetic horseshoes (8k coil) I like the cap in. Variety, I guess.nextcliffburton wrote:Just bypassed the .0047 cap and MY GOD! My 4001 has so much more thunder to it! Feel free to ask iiipopes. It's not my idea.johnallg wrote:cassius987 wrote:Why not just dial the volume back to 9 or such? Same thing.johnallg wrote:iiipopes recommends sometimes putting a weak resistor in series with it, but he never mentioned a cap.
Re: How can I get my treble pickup more bass?
I have the cap removed on my 83 4003 and I only use my treble pickup. To help with more boom I suggest making full use of an Equalizer and frequency knob, either in pedal form or in amplifier form. Strings also make a difference, as does where you play (between neck and bridge pickups or between bridge pick up and bridge), how you play (pick or fingers). I personally play between the bridge pick up and the bridge with a Dunlop Tortex heavy pick (the green ones) for the rockin bits. For the sexy bits sometimes I play between both pick ups and use my index finger. Rare occasion though. Depends on the room. Just my 2p

Wow!!!! Behold the New God Of Thunder!!!!
Re: How can I get my treble pickup more bass?
Hey Jack, try backing off the neck pickup volume knob to 8 or 7, with or without the .0047 cap in the bridge pckup circuit. You'll have more growl and tone clearence/intelligibility while retaining bass from the "bass" pickup.nextcliffburton wrote:The middle position has alot of good bass and some treble but I find it losses a bunch of the growl the higher position has.
And, welcome aboard!

Jake, sorry for the typo, ha!
Re: How can I get my treble pickup more bass?
so what was the overall verdict on this?
Re: How can I get my treble pickup more bass?
I did that.fatcat wrote:Has anyone here tried putting the capacitor on the neck pickup,if so what did it sound like?
It sounds like nothing you really must have.
There's so much bass from that pickup, that on its own it just sounds somewhat thinner. (turn the bass down on your amp, it's the same effect)
Good for Lemmy.
The most interesting combination is neck with cap together with the uncapped bridge.
This gives you a fretless-like midrangy growl that will really cut through any mix.
But like I said, not that you really need this tone.
Re: How can I get my treble pickup more bass?
not to threadjack but Wim your avatar/profile pic is awesome. I love it. Anyway back on track. My old 4001 had the cap in it, but I never noticed much of a loss in the treble pickup at all. However my 4003 had a massive cut. Now all I use is that pickup and its very well rounded. Josh Chandler could tell you what it sounds like. You'd have no idea that it was only one pickup I was using at all. I would say another contributing factor to the low end in the bridge would also lead to what strings, how you play (fingers, pick, type of pick <felt, nylon, tortex, metal), what you're playing through, if you're using compression, and if you're EQing. I typically don't like to modify guitars too often, but I had no choice but to bypass that cap. I think if I buy another 80's 4001 I likely won't and just leave it as is.
