Reviving a topic here, Paul, about your book, as I looked through the various Bass topics and didn't see any recent references ---

Just wondering what the status is of your book ?? I seem to recall you've been working on this project for awhile. Are you making good progress ?? Any status report you can share without giving away your trade secrets ? Have you a time line for publication or just working at your leisure ??

Most of the activity on this book has been inside my head. I still intend to finish it someday, but there is no schedule, no deadline, and no publisher barking at my heels. I had a verbal statement of interest with Hal Leonard, but they wanted me to secure RIC's "buy in" - their term for RIC's full help with my research which I haven't been able to attain. RIC has given exclusive rights to their "archives" to Matt Hill who is apparently working just as slowly on a book as well. So any official access to historical records and a deeper dive into their photos will have to go through Matt. I've talked with Matt once, and hope to establish some sort of cooperative with him. He is now a curator at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. More to come on that front.

RIC has helped some, supplying 18 historical publicity shots from a list of 81 images requested, and John Hall has filled out a questionnaire that has answered some points.

I have collected several hundred photos of Rick basses, mostly with Forumite's cooperation at the Confluences, but also from several collectors around the world. I've created a rough draft (some of you have seen it) of a bass model family tree and timeline which is still in pencil as information dribbles in that changes it.

It is likely that the book will be self-published, and when it's done, will be available electronically (that doesn't mean FREE), and in print (to order). I probably won't make money on it, but I don't intend to spend my retirement funds on it, either.

The largest portion of the content so far has come from Forumites right here. The lack of accurate historical record is largely replaced by the accumulated knowledge of our members. We've all learned a lot from the folks here, and we've all learned by noting our experiences with our instruments. I hope the book will gather all this knowledge into one reference, the one that we all will go to for answers.

I'd suggest having a well laid out historical resource website than struggling with a downloadable book that is more limited. A website is a more accessible version of an ebook that can always be updated.
