Re: Advice on RIC Guitars

I've been reading some reviews on the 650 Dakota and it generally gets high marks, but one thing concerns me: there's mention of wood shrinkage in dry conditions that causes the frets to "overhang" the fingerboard. Having played fretless bass for so long, I've developed a left hand position that makes me sensitive to frets when changing position on the fingerboard.

Has anyone had any experience like this with the 650?

Thanks.

This will happen with many maple-necked and -boarded guitars, not just Ricks, and usually in response to extreme changes in humidity.

Solution: keep things at the correct humidity year 'round...45-50% is my bench mark.

In the winter, in a colder climate with the house heat on, humidity can drop to below 5%, causing shrinkage the same as for desert-like conditions.

So, this isn't a "650" problem--it's a "maple neck/fretboard" problem.

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but who makes a good room humidifier? Or, is just better to go with the case variety?

Try Best Buy or Humidifiers R Us...

Seriously, it's an appliance I haven't had to contend with for years now. My guitar room is set into the hillside, and year-round it never varies from 65-68°F and 45%-55% humidity, so I have no need for one.

I have in-case humidifiers for a few of my more precious instruments for when they leave the house, but they seem to be most stable in the room itself.

Surprised there isn't a Humidifiers 'R Us (could be one in some mall somewhere).
Glad to hear your geetars are comfy, but not all of us live in the Bay area.
Anyone else?

I did some research on humidifiers today, and it seems that there are a number of different options, ranging from very good to very bad. I haven't had enough time to develop a solid opinion one way or another. Hon*ywell does seem to have some negative feedback, though, and they make a good number of them.

Oh, and BTW, I e-mailed Chris @ Pick of the Ricks, and he had a Dakota left, so I took the plunge a few minutes ago. Hopefully noone else committed to it earlier. I know it's the lowest-priced Rick guitar, but it has a few features I really like: fairly large neck, oil finish, and it appears to be more amenable to a slightly distorted sound than most Rick guitars.
