Which Ric guitar/bass of yours has the best neck?
Some of us guitar players love fat, beefy, chunky necks. Some of us love slim, tiny, toothpick necks that feel good as you wrap your thumb around the fretboard, and making it easy for you to add your thumb to chords.
I know most of you bassists out there love your necks narrow and slim, like a Jazz bass or a Thunderbird. Some of you might like a Precision-wide neck. There could be the odd person who likes his necks beefy.

My best neck, that I've ever played, has to be my '89 1997SPC, just feels so good. My 360/12V64, though, is SLIGHTLY beefer, but according to Jdog, has a neck slimmer than his 370/12SPC, and that was pretty slim.

Absolutely, Positively my 370/12. The width and string spacing just seems to be perfect for my hand! Just to be fair, I love my 650 but I need to warm up on a classical guitar before I play it...man that neck is wide!

It's a tossup between my AZ blue WB and my Big Red; they're different, but each has its fine qualities.

My all-time favorite RIC neck is on my 370/12 RM. It has just the right fingerboard width and cross section that really enhances its playability. I've heard this from other 370/12 RM owners. It definitely has its own unique neck.

I really liked my '74 4001, but I unfortunately sold that one due to some financial issues. When I came across the '76 4001 AZ I now have, it felt so much like my old friend I just had to have it. My '84 4003 isn't bad, but it's just not quite as nice as the '76. Now, my 4004Cjj is something completely different, but I have to say, I'm liking it a lot. Not quite as wonderful as the '76, but I think I like it better than the '84...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

My '74 4001 Azure Glo has a fabulous neck, even better than my '74 4000. There seems to be a lot of support for the '74 basses here.
My '91 660/12TP has a pretty fine neck as well...

'65 365OS I used to own. Like most 360 necks in the mid 60's, small and thin.
Best modern----- '00 1997 reissue. Fatter than vintage, but far better for leads/bending etc.
Sometimes a good neck has less to do with it's original shape, and more to do with how much it's been played. My '64 RM is a good example of this---- typical small round non-deluxe 60's neck, but broken in x1000 and feels great.
...I am super picky about necks though. A bad neck shape can ruin a guitar fast.

I take it you're not a fan of 60s Fender 12s?collin wrote:

Like current 330 necks? I tell ya, I tried one at the local music store yesterday, (plugged into a Twin Reverb, and still couldn't become louder than the shredder) and BOY that neck was HUGE. Maybe bigger than a '52 Tele (which I've had the joy of playing, the neck isn't too bad, in my opinion)? All the same, it didn't feel right to me. I could play all the while on my two, but current Rics (even reissues), not really. My favorite Ric era: '87-'93collin wrote:I am super picky about necks though. Collin, I'll be happy to tell you all the details of what I saw on that 330 via PM, if you're interested, to compare notes from the one you bought from MF.
