Any love here for Gretsch basses?
Any love here for Gretsch basses?
I've seen a couple I like the look of, specifically the G6073 Electrotone. I seen one review which said that it weighed a ton, but I'm looking for an informed opinion from you guys
. Has anyone here played one or had the chance to look one over? Any help gratefully appreciated.

Re: Any love here for Gretsch basses?
I once played a Gretsch guitar; probably a '77-'79 model - don't know remember exactly. It was back in the early '80s. Felt and played quite nice, but they were well out of my price range at the time. But those fake f-holes. Seriously; make a hollow-body or don't, but don't try to fake it. Uggh.
That said, I'll bet this bass plays nice.

Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Didn't Gretsch basses (60's models) have thumb rests/tug bars on the bass and treble sides of the bass?
John Entwistle used a Gretsch bass in '65, shortly after he got rid of his RM 1999, it's probably the thumpy bass we hear on "Daddy Rollin' Stone" and "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere"

I've demoed a Broadkaster bass (G6119B), which is fairly similar to the 6073 and liked it a lot....but they do tend to be a little heavy and they are short scale (I think the 6072 "Country Gentleman" is the sole exception to this Gretsch rule - and it is one HUGE bass). I like short scale basses but they're not everyone's cup of vodka... I passed on the Broadkaster at the time because of the weight issue (my back was in a dodgy state back then), but I've been trawling around for a used one at the right price recently.

Thanks Evan. I also like the short scale, but also don't like the idea of a heavy weight. I still like the look of it even though it may be large enough to actually hide behind.antipodean wrote:I've demoed a Broadkaster bass (G6119B), which is fairly similar to the 6073 and liked it a lot....but they do tend to be a little heavy and they are short scale (I think the 6072 "Country Gentleman" is the sole exception to this Gretsch rule - and it is one HUGE bass). i got to play an old one (the big hollowbody with the paddle headstock),and the main thing i got from it was: it was huge! with that big round hollow body AND a full scale set neck, the left hand reach to the first fret was daunting, and i have pretty long arms and fingers. it did sound really nice and full, but wasn't something i would go for-loved the look and sound of it,though. have never seen or played any other gretsch basses.
