I prefer "clearer" tone for slap and pop so I was only using the treble pickup most of the time when I demoed my go-to slap piece, Marcus Miller's "Power" from the album M^2. I tried it with the bass pickup and, yeah, lots of rumble, but that's not what double-thumb and slap/pop are about for me. The blend did sound very nice though, for that style.

The string spacing might be a bit wider--I'm not sure--but it was a bit easier to double-thumb without accidentally striking the other strings. Still, I'm so used to slap/pop on my 4003, that this 4004 that was probably set up BETTER for it, actually felt alien to me.

I really think that a 4004, if it is set up and built as well as the one I played, would be good enough for just about anything. There are a handful of things on the 4003 that I prefer--mainly pickup placement for tone, and the wiring harness--but the 4004 is definitely an equally worthy bass, built and set up properly. I'm going to try to acquire one some day, I have decided.

If you want the "southern" pickup spacing try to get one from 2004, apparently. [Don't tell my wife, she thinks they are too plain! She loves my 4003s and can't stand a 4000-series without a big retro pickguard. Paging Dane Wilder...]
