Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs (Sugar Shack)

Post by longhouse »

GREAT footage of the bassist's Ric in this clip. What a weird looking, soft sounding bunch of guys though! Thank goodness the British invaded soon after this cheesefest. The band is armed with some great instruments too... but all you hear are the whistly parts, vocals (which make Bobby Goldsboro sound like Lemmy) and the bass.

It's too bad that they'll be remembered for that cheeseball instead of Bottle of Wine, or the earlier surf instrumentals released as THe Fireballs. My fave is Torquay

Sugar Shack came out in 1963, and this lip synched performance looks to be later than that. Also, according to what I have read from other sources, the bass on that track is not a Rick, but a Danelectro six-string bass. I have often heard Sugar Shack cited as the quintessential six string bass track.

I would guess the date of the visual portion of that vid to be 1968 or 1969.

I've always been a fan of that song, but I think it would get my vote for "worst bass tone of all time."
