If I ever did it with my (ex) Jazz Bass or Stingray, you're right, I couldn't hear what was going on to the fullest extent. But with my Rics, I always want to get the electric sound to just be a louder version of the acoustic sound, so it's okay for me to practice unplugged usually. Besides, Ric basses are so LOUD acoustically... they resonate everything around them, turning your bed mattress or chest or whatever they're close to into a kind of amp. Fun experiment in observing waves: lay down on your bed with your bass, head on your pillow, one ear flush to it. Play low E. First you'll hear it from your exposed ear, the between both ears 50-50 as it moves into your body, then just your covered ear as it moves into the mattress and pillow.

If there's some reasonable way to damp the annoying strap lock resonance, the locks would probably be a good investment.
Joshua, have you experienced this resonance only when you're not plugged in or also at low or high volumes through your amp? Getting it through the amp would be somewhat troubling to me.

I'm still going back and forth on this whole straplock thing - even back in the day the Rick never dropped out of its strap (at least not that I remember :)); granted I was pretty active on stage but not as active as Flea.

All of that said there appears to be a lot of good options to choose from here.

Thanks

I try not to sleep with my basses as it upsets my wife....

on my 4001 I sometimes get a chirp or squeek from the strap loks when donning or taking off the bass. This does not come thru the amp. There is no sound when the bass is on and there is tension on the lock. The noise only happens when there is no tension. this doesn't happen on my 4003s5.

White Elmer's Glue or the yellow Titebond. A little dab'll do ya.

It may sound funny, but I saw a video of Timmy C of Rage against the Machine where he had used the red rubber washers from those flip top Grolsch bottles as strap locks.

I looked into it, grabbed a six pack and threw them on my Ric. They've been on ever since (a couple years ago) and havn't let me down. These things are the PERFECT remedy for ****** strap locks that cost 10$ +. This way, you get indestructable strap locks and great Dutch beer!

That's what I ended up doing. It's been fine since.

Only acoustic, like fret buzz.
