First Authorized Rickenbacker copy

Post by ricnbacker »

So the new Rock Band Beatles edition is due out soon.

Looks like the controller is a 330 copy.

How the heck did they pull off convincing J Hall to let them do it???

lol

It's intended to be a controller in the spirit of John Lennon's 325 Miami short-scale.

And it's a win-win deal for both parties, so as a business proposition, it makes sense.

See this article from today's NYT to get an idea of how hug this thing promises to be:

And it can't be passed off as being a genuine Rick...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I got that part....

Of course its a win win but there have been many things that could have made good business sense with Rickenbackers...Just funny how its a toy that gets the nod

Interestingly, my Chandler 555, which predates the controller by many years, has "Authorised by Rickenbacker International Corporation" stamped on the back of the slotted headstock. This generic promo pic tells the story:

I think RIC have previously licensed certain design elements to be used by other manufacturers - if I remember this was the case with the cat-eye soundhole on Charvel's Surfcasters:

FWIW I think that's a great example of a design capturing the "feel" of certain Rickenbackers without being a knock-off in any way.

The cat's eye sound hole isn't a Rickenbacker registered trademark.
johnhall wrote:The cat's eye sound hole and the shark fin inlay are characteristics of the Mittenwald School, of which Roger was a graduate, and you can see these designs on guitars made in the 1890's. (The shark fin then was really a rectangle, diagonally bisected into black and white sections, giving the fin shape.)

I think these, with their pickguard shapes, look much like Paul Barth designed Magnatones, which predate Capris.

Well apparently they've had more than half a century to start building their version of the P - Bass, the P - Rick. But they haven't even bothered... the whole idea just atrophied, withered away as it were...

Agree 100%. They almost look like they were made from the same patterns! (Which, of course, is not possible...)

Re: P - rick, etc...Hey, you guys, a serious question deserves a better answer than that...

There have been some edits. This thread is riding a very fine line.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)
