Help-my Hi-Gains very Microphonic

Post by Emanuel-Bassist »

Hey guys, this is somthing I sent PM to a cat who has been helping me out with a hi-gain, Vol, Vol, Tone/vintage tone pull pot in a 4004L. Perhaps some of you could weigh in.Thanx, Manny.

Hey John I finally got the time to put that bass together right (4004L with hi gains and vintage tone push/pull pot). I works perfectly and sounds awesome, Thanx! The vintage tone pot was grounding out against the cavity shielding just like we thought. One thing though, the pick ups are SUPER microphonic. So much so that I can tap with something hard on the back of the bass body or a pick on the pickup surround and hear it thru my amp...loudly. What did I do wrong this time? Help! Also there is a REALLY high amount of finger noise like I've never heard on a bass, I'm using rotosounds, but still.

Let me run down what I did: I shielded the bass with copper foil and sent that to ground at the jack. I insulated the pots from the shielding and chained all the electronics (pickups, pots, bridge ground wire) together and sent that to ground at the jack. The pickups, pots, caps and vintage tone switch are wired EXACTLY as you told me to ( tone control now works and the vintage tone switch works fine, THIS IS A VERY COOL MOD) I did solider new leads to the pickups because I needed to construct the harness outside of the cavity and needed more flexible wires when I stuffed it back in, but that was a no-brainer. I unbuttoned the hi gains but could not find 3/8" long 8-32 set screws (all the 3/8" were stainless steel). I used 5/16" ones, they dont go all the way down but seen to work until I can find some 3/8". Thats all I can think of but something has to be wrong to cause the level of microphoics that I am experiencing. Thanx, Manny.

Could be a few things- if this is a neck pickup check to ensure that the pickup element (under the chrome cover) isn't shaking/wiggling even a tiny bit inside the housing. It can happen, even if the cover is screwed down properly. The next bit is to make sure that the rubber grommet is in place- a pickup direct to plastic will cause the whole pick guard to cause it.
