I hadn't heard of the new Taylor T-5 models, and checked out some pics at Wildwood. I was amazed at the headstock/neck joint, as shown from the back. It appears that more than human guesswork was involved in the implementation of that design! Assuming those little 'stripes' are not purely cosmetic, I wonder: what are the pros and cons of this design?

This is a very well-proven and typical finger joint, which I'm familiar with through a long history with woodie wagons. It was especially favored by builders of the woodies with elaborately-curved and shaped wooden frameworks, like the Chrysler Town and Country and Ford Sportsman convertibles.

As you can imagine, the finger-joint increases gluing area to a point where the joint is typically stronger than the wood itself. It's ideally suited for parts run on CNC equipment, and is put into the part and the components glued up, before final shaping takes place. Obviously, a great deal of precision is required.

Those are the pros. The con is the precision required in setup and cutter grinding--a minor issue in these CNC days.

These will do wonders for the backlog.

It's a bit over a week's production; a drop in the bucket in terms of totals, and a bit of efficiency gained here and there will minimize their impact.

I'm dreaming of those six string 360 C63s in Jet Glo...come to think of it, the new FG finishes are so gorgeous I'm dreaming of 360 C63s in that finish as well!

I own a Taylor 12...a 455CE. It is a sublime guitar, praised liberally for its sound by musicians and non-musicians alike. It gets jaw-drops from everyone who sees and hears it for the first time.

I played it at a coffeehouse gig last week and barely needed to plug it in, it's like a cannon.

Oh yeah...I like RICKENBACKERS!

Have we even received confirmation that these models actually exist and that those photos aren't jsut photoshopped images? (which I think they are. You can see where they didn't do the best job photoshopping out the middle pickup of the 325 picture, trying to turn it into a 310)

Who cares......It's listed on the official website. They exist as much as any picture of any model on the Ric Website. When somebody lays a deposit down on a guitar and waits two years.....it technically doesn't exist yet, right?

A BETTER question is........have we found out the 5th model yet? :P

I read an article on the finger joints about a year ago in which Bob Taylor stated that building the neck this way enabled them to produce twice as many necks from the same amount of wood. The article was written about the shrinking availability of tone woods. Sorry I don't remember the magazine at the moment.

I believe that article was published, among other places, in Taylor's own literature.
