Finally Got My 330/6 FG!

Post by StringTheorist »

Hey Folks -

Just added it to the register! My first ever Rick just arrived this morning. I brought him home, cleaned him up and fixed the way-too-high action, and wow, does it play and sound nice. It's a 330/6 FG, and Serial Number Decoder says it was built in August of 1992.

I like it better than the 360 I played at the music store the other day. It's lighter, the neck feels thinner, it's louder when unplugged (great for practicing), and I love the sharp corners. I am completely thrilled.

I got some Thomastik-Infeld flatwound strings to put on it, but the existing roundwounds sound pretty darn good already. Played it through my Vox VR30, and it's lovely.

I love my new guitar, and I'm so glad to be a member of this community, you've all been so warm and welcoming!

Any Rick players in the DC area want to get together and jam? Let me know. :)

Very cool, Steve. And, it's a HIM!~

He'll have his pick of the hundreds of female Rickenbackers here on the site. All of the "shes" are so excited!

Congrats on your acquisition.
Re jamming in Virginia .... You might try getting in touch with E R I K K. a renown Ric bassist, 8) who relocated from SoCal to the Northern Virginia area.

Yes, it's a boy, and his name is "Ricky". :)

Yeah, I love the coloration, with none of the dreaded pink I've seen some laments about. Even my girlfriend, who usually HATES sunburst-type guitar finishes, thinks this one is gorgeous.

Oh, something odd about it. Notice the white knob on the pickup selector switch? That's not the original switch - the original was in the case (along with the original owner's manual and a brochure for Rickenbacker clothing and stuff). Maybe the switch went bad and he replaced it, but couldn't bear to toss the original, since the replacement wasn't exact? Or was the new switch a mod of some kind? I have no idea what the story is - I'll contact the original owner.

I tried to swap the longer black knob onto the new switch so it would at least look original, but it's not the same thread.

And if I ever get a short-scale Rick like a 325, it'll be called "Little Ricky".

I got a reply back from him. Says: "The original switch was replaced under warranty when I first bought the guitar. For some reason I left the original (possibly defective) switch in the case. It's been a while but it might be that the wiring was the problem and not the switch. If I recall, they replaced it with a Gibson switch because that's what they had in stock at the time."

I might go in and put in the correct Rickenbacker-stock switch some day when I'm feeling especially obsessive-compulsive. :)
