Custom colour on my 480

Post by electrofaro »

I was thinking of having my '75 480 re-done in a similar creamy tone as the Chris Squire LE bass. Or in a Vintage Yellow like Fender uses. If the wood grain's okay I might consider a clear colour... it's obvious I can't make up my mind.

Please make some suggestions - anything except the JG it is now, it's a refinish so I'd rather go for something the 480 didn't come in as standard factory colour.

It is a standard factory finish, but a dark Burgundyglo would look great on a 480. This may cover some of the issues which could appear from under the Jetglo, while still showing some grain.

How does it play and sound?

There may be some nasties under the JG refin, so I'd suggest a solid colour. I personally like Ruby Red.... Cloverfield Green would also be rather funky!

Burgundyglo would be a nice colour, indeed... mmm... must consider that one. I also had a greyish-white semi translucent paint in mind.

How it sounds? Different... than my 360... it plays different as well, but not in a negative way or anything. The bridge needs to be replaced, which will happen within the month. I'm sure it'll play a lot better then!

I like your idea for CS creamy white, personally. But you may want to wait to decide until you see what the grain looks like.

Yeah, I'm planning on getting it done early next year at the earliest - need to save a bit - luckely I don't have any bad, unhealthy habits, like sporting, that swallow up my money :D

I was wondering how it would look in a kind of "Slateglo" :?:

I think Burgundyglo's off the list... I did add this one for semi-transparent colours in case the wood's not too bad:

 Yeah, I believe the appreciation for Cloverfield Green can be an acquired taste whose appeal may be largely based in nostalgia for many of us. Hey, but that's a good thing!. Different strokes for different folks is what makes the world go 'round.

Werner, that Strat looks really nice - think of a beautifully grained 4001/3 in that color scheme....

I'd rather not... last thing I need is getting another Ric and learning to play bass... neither money nor time... but then I shouldn't complain with both going to gigs (Coldplay last night) and holidays (Edinburgh and Crete) :D

So far I've narrowed the options down to this:

If the wood has a decent grain:
The "Marbleglo" shown above on the Strat
Natural finish

If the wood's 'orrible:
4001CS-like colour
Vintage White ("Yellow")

I bet this list will change over time. I'm taking a long time to decide as I don't want to be disappointed by the colour within a couple of weeks!

Actually, I was musing out loud. I really like the look of that color combo on the Strat and it would look great on a bass, my instrument of choice.

Either of your choices would be doable, tough choices. Having seen CS basses, I vote MarbleGlo.

In case the wood is too bad for a semi-transparent finish, have a look at my Strat with a Desert Sand finish.

Yeah, would look extremely nice... we'll have to wait and see. It's like waiting for Xmas in summer... I'd rather get it refinished yesterday rather than tomorrow :(
