Re: 2010 Australian Rickenbacker Confluence - Melbourne
Does any of the Melbourne forumites have a recommendation as to which hotel(s) we should consider staying at? As far as the airline tickets go, I'm waiting for Continental Airlines to complete it's switch of airline alliances.

There are plenty of brand name hotels, HOLIDAY INN ETC and other independant hotels and you may find motels better value and well appointed or even Aussie pubs with accommodation. Its been a while since I stayed in a pub but that used to be my preferred place of stay because the food and liquor was cheap and there were no drinking and driving issues.
How long do you intend to stay and in what area and what is your budget per night?

I think Darren has a spare room available?

BTW, the cheapest air fare that I've found so far is on Singapore Airlines. $1,400 round trip between Houston and Melbourne, with a change of planes (each way) in Moscow and Singapore.

Cheap airfares are still freely available.
Check Qantas: departures are from JFK and LAX and I believe they have a code share arrangement with AA for departures from other cities in the US.
Also check Delta and V Australia. I believe United are still doing cheap fares but their in flight service is apparently a little lacking.
I just checked United's website: AUD 976.31 LAX - MEL return, departing 28 March return 10 April. The others should have similar prices. Be aware though that prices can fluctuate greatly in a short space of time, and the closer you get to the departure date generally the higher the price.
Take a couple of good books with you, it's about 15 hours from LAX !!!

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

Maybe Santa will put a ticket in my stocking? Maybe I will win that ever elusive lottery? or Maybe I will manage to save the money because all my bills will magically disappear! Desperately hoping to attend... but realistically the chances are not very good. But I won't give up hope until the day it begins.
Same here Tams. I wish I could go too, but doubt I could get the money together. You never know though. If I win the lottery, I will get your ticket for you and meet you there!! That would be fun!!

We could twist that further to FARK - which is an Australianism. Replace the C with a K in Confluence, with respect to the european herrs!carr wrote:First Australian Rickenbacker Confluence

Either way, should I have a Ric by this time I will be there. I am only two hours up the road so I will make the weekend trip.
