You're the second or third person who's said that. It's c.1991
How do you tell an early one from a later version???

Jeez, John. Such a gorgeous bass should not be displayed so...blurrily. Surely there are sunny days in the 'Zoo every now and then? Surely you can take out 4 minutes to snap some nice photos of that beauty?

Oh, and nice bass Greg! That is a really cool example.

Oh, Greg's is okay, but it is backwards!

You are right, John, but I am a lousy picture taker... I will try to get them, just for you.

Kevin, he was teasing about the blurry picture...

There are a few things that changed over the years, but the most obvious one IMO is the headstock. Sometime around 1996 or 1997 the headstock changed on the 4003, the 4001V63, and the 4001CS as they all apparently began sharing the same neck/headstock tooling. The V63 and CS models got around 1/2 inch shorter, and went from the 60's headstock look to the "bulbous" headstock look. The TRC though, stayed the same size. I'm not sure if the tooling changed for the lefty basses at the same time, but it did on the rightys.

Observe for yourself! (Pics nabbed from the register)

1997 4001V63FG headstock:

1992 4001V63FG headstock:

Notice how the TRC comes closer to the end of the headstock on the 1997 than on the 1992.

There's also the smaller radii on the treble pu surround which is on basses up to about mid '92.

Yes, the treble pickup surround changed, but not just the radius on the front corners. The depth of the front flange also got deeper with a corresponding shortening of the pickguard where it meets it. The rear "ducktail" shape also changed. While a new pickguard can be made and the shape of the treble surround can be altered to appear more "correct" like the earlier models, the headstock cannot. I have seen some CS4001's with early headstocks and later guards and surrounds though.

Kevin, you been holding out on me! Nice picture, never saw it before. I saved it as it looks better than the ones I took today.

John B - I have pictures but need to find the editing program I had on the old hard drive to crop and resize them.

Sure enough, Greg, the one you saw at MARF 3. The same one Kevin is posting the backside pic of. She's been mine for a year and a half now. Had to pull it out and play for an hour or so last night when I got home at 1am. Great feel, darker tone. The hot pups. I want to put the .0047uF cap on the RIHS and see what change it makes. Out of curiosity.

How's your lefty play and sound?

When you bring that bass to Cleveland while Jdog is here (hopefully) we can take some new photos for you.
