Paging Jim Krause!!!
Re: Paging Jim Krause!!!
One of my favorites, Gamble Rogers
This guy isn't Blind Blake, but he plays Blind Blake's West Coast Blues just as well at Blake did.

Re: Paging Jim Krause!!!
Glad you guys like the tunes, it's always nice to hear. I live in Akron, a few miles south of Peninsula, and I do teach at Woodsy's. Mostly what I do is play all over Ohio, sometimes out west. The young Jorma clip is cool. Him, Ry Cooder And David Bromberg were some of my main influences when I started playing ragtime/piedmont blues back in the 70's. The biggest influences were the blind dead guys: Blind Boy Fuller and Blind Blake. Big Bill Broonzy and Joseph Spence are way cool too - they weren't blind but they are dead...

Sorry if you get this post twice, I'm new on rickrescource, not quite sure where I'm putting things.

Welcome to the forum Jon. We have been enjoying your music immensely.

Welcome, Jon!
Our "mutual friend" is Warren Bendler, who I have known since the 5th grade!
He went to Kent in the mid '80s and currently lives in South Euclid; he is the main vocalist and rhythm guitarist in our band, The Karma Kings.

Welcome to the RRF, Jon. I'm a big fan of those blind, dead guys, too; Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Blake, Blind Willie McTell.

Here are a couple photos of Warren to jog your memory, Jon. I just spoke with him, he mentioned a gig at the Canal Visitor Center where you met his wife, Janell.

I lost touch with Warren & Janell a few years back. Tell them I said "Hey". The blind dead (or just dead) guys were the coolest. You listen to very much Blake or Fuller?
If you like my stuff, there's more of me on youtube. What I know of is this: Random Acts Of Music (one tune and a piedmont blues guitar lesson), the Back Room, an interview & tune on "Road Runner Rocks" from the mid-late '90's? (sound quality is really bad, but you can see me when I was young & handsome). I think there are also some clips on the Ohio Choro Club myspace page (I play mando & cavaquinho with them). That's probably way too much info for you.

I listen a lot to Blake. I had been trying for over 20 years to get my thumb to do that syncopated jump thing he's noted for. Finally got it one day about 15 years ago. Now I can't quit it!moseyguitar wrote:The blind dead (or just dead) guys were the coolest. You listen to very much Blake or Fuller?
I've been getting back into 12 string guitars lately, so I've been listening to a lot of Blind Willie. His playing knocked me out back in the early '70s as a college kid. I played a Yamaha 12 string in those days. And to hear recordings of a guy who could really play 12 string as opposed to just strumming chords was a real eye opener. I particularly liked his version of "Delia."

Yeah, McTell was one of the few who really played 12-string, and didn't just do the strummer/thumper approach. Barbecue Bob was pretty cool too. Same with Robert Jr. Lockwood - he played some great electric 12 stuff (acoustic too). Too bad there aren't more of the contemporary players doing Piedmont/Ragtime on 12's.
That double thumb stuff that Blake did was really tough to get, but it's so cool. I use it a lot. Fuller did a thing that sounded like it but what he did was a thumb-finger thing, usually when he was doing a C to A walkdown. Truckin My Blues Away is full of that. Now that I've mentioned that, I wonder if he did the same thing on a G to E walkdown. No reason not to - it's the same thing dropped down one string. Off hand I don't remember any but I'll have to listen. Fuller also did a really cool disco bass line (ascending octaves from E up to G#) that I like a lot.
