Ric Bass Tones on Record: Most Aggressive

Post by Benjamin »

New thread, lets start the anger!

TOOL - Undertow
4001CS with shoes apparently removed from HS.

Ricaine - Intore: the cold grey rain, Regret is an inevitable consequence of life
4000 with Bartolini pickup.

The Mark Of Cain - Any album
Unsure if Kim(?) Scott actually used a Ric. He did use an Ibanez clone at some point. Either way it sounds Ric-like and it is chunky and agressive. I don't care if it was a faker or not!

Not the most aggressive, but still unique and hard, Magic Dirt. The late and great Dean Turner played a 4001 JGLH through assorted Big Muff and Ampeg. Big, fat and wooly but with requisite thick growl.

Kyuss - And the circus leaves town
4001/3? FGLH. Fat downtuned growly goodness!

I've always leaned toward the "natural" growl on Heart of the Sunrise (intro) by Yes.

If you can believe it, there is not a version of this uploaded on Youtube that I can find is the original version?
So I had to settle for this to make my point.

Lemmie's 4001 is pretty aggressive sounding through those Marshalls.

i've always admired Kira Roessler's work in Black Flag...not terribly aggressive though for a Ric...

and i was surprised (and impressed) the first time i saw Mogwai play, the bassist deals to a 4003AG - was cool to see a Ric in one of my favourite bands and the exact same model as mine.

anything by Ufomammut would have to be my pick of Most Aggressive...hellish prog sludge! Kehlvin a close second (tho i think the bass man uses a vintage Ibanez copy).

Nice video & performance, Steve. I liked the sub titles! Are you tuned down a 1/2 step?

clatter's bass sound is plenty aggressive, really very guitar-like,but used in a melodic way. the move's bass sound on "message from the county" is really cutting, esp for a studio recording from the early 70's. sparks "kimono my house" sports some great strong rickenbasslines as well....

Alan Davey, Lemmy's successor in Hawkwind. Now (among other things) with his own band Gunslinger. (Which i saw live and really is a great band!)

I always felt the guy from Rush(forget his name) was a pretty aggressive Ric bass finger plucker. Especially on the first albums.

Al Cisneros' tone with Sleep especially on The Druid is pretty damn aggressive.
