my fave tone when i had mine was the back pickup full up volume, tone full off, front pickup volume rolled back a quarter--just a very phaaat jazzbass-like sound, smooth but very cutting.....not too different from what i'm able to get with my cii now....

That's some nappy-headed goodness, Steve! Great playing. Those upper-register trills from 'I Wish' sounded verbatim.

jdog said "Woody - which is front/back?"

sorry, shoulda said it this way, back=bridge pickup, front =well, the pbass positioned pickup. i tend to favor the the bridge pickup sound when i play multi pickup basses....the 4002 had seymour duncuns with coil taps, and i would leave the bridge pickup on full coil, and tap the forward pickup. i love the ebony fretboards on the 4002.

For the last year or so, I've really been enjoying the 4002 with the bass vol and tone both at 8 or 9, the treble vol and tone at 10.

They are probably the most versatile Ric I've played for tonal palette--and 4003s are hardly one-trick ponies. I think it was an incredibly brilliant design in its time and still is.

Really nice - thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice growl out of the flats too.
