Neck Vs Bridge Toaster Clips

Post by cassius987 »

Lots of people here know that I borrowed Jeff's idea and stuck a Toaster in the bridge position of my 4003FL. Some have asked me for sound clips--three or four total. I can't remember who, however, so here are some clips I made to illustrate the difference for anyone interested:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... dID=816857

The two files are taken from the exact same performance, it's just each pickup is isolated and converted mono... the first bit is me playing random walking bass with some drums, then it's a small bit from Portrait of Tracy by Jaco. I think the two samples are really illustrative of the difference. The Jaco bit features the in-line cap for the treble pickup. The bass is totally raw, just direct into Garageband using a stereo cable. Tone controls are at about half on each pickup for both performances.

Enjoy.

I did! :)
A bit more brightness and growl in the bridge position, smoother sounding in the neck position. Fine job, Joshua. The 4003 makes a great fretless bass, so did the 4001. There are many who have never heard one that are skeptical about the sound of one. Sound clips like this should be convincing

Yeah, my opinion right now is that there is a fundamental presence in the neck position that is almost completely absent in the bridge position (and in P and J Basses for comparison to other popular passives). In the bridge position it is a lot more of the first and second harmonics, until you get into the higher register, and it starts picking up the fundamentals of those notes just fine. That's what I've noticed so far.

Hey thanks! :D I probably should have made some clips like this sooner, I have gotten asked what the 4003FL sounds like many times. These clips really only just feature two examples out of many, though...

To get a better idea of what the 4003FL actually sounds like IN PERSON here's a live clip:

Dug up another one! Here's Spain with a Jaco intro.

Thanks Joey. Can you do that for "Spain" also? Sorry to bug you... thanks for being a proactively helpful mod! +1 to ya.

Steve... Thank you! I really hope you check out "Spain" too, it's not as "slow-paced" as the other song.

You're welcome! Oops, missed the second one as I was getting ready for work and missed it. Fixed now though. :)

Thanks so much. I too sometimes do the "check forums before work" thing and it's hard to get much done in five minutes.
