Although the onstage volume seemed fine to me, the sound guy told me at the break that he had taken me out of the PA and I was still too loud! I've also just picked up a Bergantino 12" neo cabinet - its a nice addition to the 2 X10" if needed, and should be great (and light!) on its own for smaller gigs.
For many sound men the bass is something to stay in the background underneath the guitar and drums, Many sound men like to crank the kick and have the bass almost subliminal. They should always balance the sound no matter how loud it is if they can't get people to turn down,
I don't understand that thinking. I've even been to a Rush concert where I could barely hear Geddy Lee's bass!! That was in the Steinberger days. It's gotten a little better the past few years. I've been hearing the bass well much more often at shows I've been to and played at than the way it used to be.
Yup I've heard good and bad, I don't understand sound men who try to control everyone on the stage. I've run into some great ones and some real A-holes who seem to be on a control trip more than anything. A sound man's job is to augment the sound not control it, you want the band to sound live not sound like a giant juke box.
