Don't forget Dave Meros playing on some of Spock's Beards early stuff, crunchy rick tones played with a pick. I think someone here even bought his bass from that time off ebay back in 2003.

Hm... Great to see someone mention Martin Gordon's awesome 4001 tone and playing on "Kimono My House".
Esperanto Rock Orchestra's 1975 release, "Last Tango" features some of the most in-your-face 4001 tone ever. I forget which one of the Malisan brothers - Tony or Gino - was the bassplayer with the band though.

How's about Gary Strater from Starcastle! Pretty aggresive tones on all 4 albums especially the last one...the not great "real to reel". Great sound from a late '60's fireglo 4001 deluxe!

I like Geddy Lee's sound from his Rickenbacker 4001 on the song "Countdown" from the Signals album. And he has a great sound on the Exit...Stage Left album. "Limelight" from the ESL video is pretty awesome and "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" on that video is sick too.
Also some of the tones on the Caress of Steel album from "The Necromancer" are really good too.

Look it up.

Yeah, Ged really tears it up during By-Tor.2112 wrote:I like Geddy Lee's sound from his Rickenbacker 4001 on the song "Countdown" from the Signals album. Less Rushy but equally mainstream, I'd suggest Squires's crunching sound on Long Distance Runaround, particularly those descending slides he does on the E string.
And one I've just thought of: isn't it his jetglo 4008 we hear Joe Satriani playing on Echo, from Surfing With The Alien? I always liked that meaty growl.
