A NEAT TREAT

Post by jingle_jangle »

A recent customer decided to do something very unusual to an otherwise "Plain Jane" (e.g., unmodified) MG 330/12:

He asked me to replace the dot markers with full-width crushed pearl inlays, and to bind the neck with checkerboard.

In order to do this properly, I also had to refret and refill the board before coating everything with new CV and polishing it to a nice gloss.

The result is a very nice "old yet new" look that sparks up the guitar to "what the heck is that?" status:

Very cool! Given how busy the edge of the fingerboard looks now, I would have had LED side markers installed.

Very eye-popping!

It's interesting how much lighter the rosewood is post-surgery. Is the red color due to long-term exposure to air?

Bubinga is one of the species of tropical hardwoods that gets darker upon exposure to UV radiation. There are a few species that get very dark after a few months of sunlight; padauk is one of the most dramatic shifters, beginning when first milled as a brilliant red-brown almost exactly the color of this page header and aging to a color very much like walnut.

Nice one Paul!

Do you have a shot of the whole guitar, top to bottom, so we can see the total presentation?

Paul, I can't see any white lines in the fretboard - did the grain need filling and if so did you use clear filler that RIC announced recently?

That's just awesome. The shot with the finished bound fretboard is outstanding.

Dazzled me right to the point that this morning I noticed the spot of buffing compound that I missed cleaning off... :(

Paul, that looks amazing---well done!

The fretboard edge certainly does look busy. I think I'd go cross-eyed trying to see where I'm playing! :P

It should look classy with Gold TRC/guards too. Nice!
