To case or not to case

Post by VRICKY63 »

I never leave my basses out after being played at home. The other night I must have been tired and left my FG4003 4-2-5 out on a stand in my room. The next morning when I walked in I was stunned ! What a beautiful instrument. Deep Fireglo, full length inlays, sparkling chrome, wow! Can I leave it out of the case for just one more day ?

I leave mine out daily. It just sits there in front of the amp looking all cool.

She was a case queen for 20+ years so I feel like putting her in the case would cripple her playing style.

Oddly, every once in a while, she'll ask, 'When are you putting me back in the case? I feel dirty out here."

Every time, I have to force myself not to cry because of the sadness.

No, I never put her in the case unless she's leaving the house.

It's just too... painful.

I leave my basses out as much as possible. I don't quite have room in my little studio for all of them to be out at once, so there's usually two in cases at any given time. I have several wall hangers and a couple of floor stands for them.

I used to leave my basses out all the time when I lived in NY.
In SoCal, I don't leave them out often. Between the changes of humidity from morning to afternoon...and possible earthquakes, they stay in their cases when not in use.

That is something to consider. When I was living in CA, I wasn't playing at the time and I hadn't considered that as an issue.

Humidity

and

Earthquakes

Definitely something that would be damaging to any instrument. ;)

Mine stays out on a hanger in my studio. It's just too pretty to hide away. I figure some folks pay millions of dollars to hang collectible artwork on their walls. I got a beautiful, original, Rickenbacker to hang on mine for a mere fraction of that!!

Mine are in their cases. I don't want the white one to yellow any more than it already has. And sunbursts (OK I have 10 vintage Fenders) are never left on the stand - I hate it when the red fades. I had a metallic Cherry EB2 fade to a kind of dark amber, this will not happen again. What I have on the stand next to the amp are either a stripped (not by me!) '66 Mustang bass that my son plays, or any of my 5 black basses (I like the way black ages, when the clearcoat yellows and it makes the black look like a very dark green). All other colors stay out of direct sunlight.

I like Rickenbacker's for their sound most. Another important reason is looks. And I do like to look at them whenever posible. So all my instruments (of which most are Rickenbacker's) are on permantent display at home. My cases are for transportation only, not for storage.

Mine all stay in their cases. We have too much activity in our house. It gives me piece of mind to know that they can't be knocked over by one of the dogs.

I keep most in the cases, the one I feel like playing/hearing on a stand. Basses get rotated when the mood grabs me.

My Rics (no basses) are generally hanging on the wall.
